I am probably in the minority, but I disagree with teachers being armed. If you want a security presence, you need to hire professional security personnel with the proper training and mentality. There are several other options available, and arming teachers would be very far down on my list.

Like a professional, full time Sheriff's deputy? Who will stay outside the building and not go in?

Same old arguments I heard about colleges and universities. First of all, you don't pay teachers to carry or then you would have lesser trained people carrying just for the money. Only those teachers that have LTC's should carry, just like in colleges. Why should it be different? Do you think teachers will now become the shooters? Pure BS.

I'm all for the idea...with the caveat that off body carry is not allowed. What I don't want is some teacher putting the gun in a drawer of their desk where it's just going to get stolen.
That is the rule at my College, only safes or secured lockboxes.

#4 - Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

(a real important sticking point for the "armed" person in a normally crowded environment such as a school, training is important here where there are other innocents likely in very close proximity)

Are you saying he was on his own time and not getting money for what he was doing ?

Any way you look at it he was getting money and providing security. And if you are saying being a deputy makes him more he proved it made him less

That wasn't just paid security, that was a deputy.

I think Austin was differentiating between a mall cop and a LEO. His job was to be at the school, this was not picking up a little OT.

There''s an idea being discussed on another site of retired Leo and ltc folks taking the TX school safety certification training and volunteering time to local schools. I think it'' a worthy idea that needs to be looked at further and refined.

    Rural Wise County, TX.
Texas school teachers/admins can already carry with training.
A customer of mine is a school principal and the district bought him a Glock to carry on his elementary school campus.

It is a rural district in Jack County so firearms are more commonplace it seems. (people are not 'freaked-out)

I don't want this to turn into a shitshow. Please don't read in to my posts any further than what I have written. I simply stated that I believe there are better options available than JUST arming teachers. If the qualifications for carry/carry in schools remain as they are, then I do not feel like those who are carrying are remotely qualified to provide security to students in high threat/extreme scenarios.

To add-on, this is what I do for a living. I provide and advise on security for large corporations and government facilities overseas. I usually train on active shooter scenarios several times a month with people from multiple backgrounds. I have been doing this now for just over 10 years.

    I agree, to an extent.
Some will be able to respond, other's won't.

Problem is, and like that Deputy, and despite the best training possible, you will never know how you will react to a live fire situation until it happens.

But if only one good armed man can make a difference, why not?
