Would like to have an AR, and increasingly get the feeling I need one considering where I spend much of my time these days.

At this point in life, not enthusiastic about a build, but at a loss as to where to start.

I wouldn't wait too long, there are tons of youtube videos on where to start, but it is entirely up to you. It wouldn't surprise me if things get to where it may be difficult to get one.

I shot the hubster’s one at the range on Monday. Dang, it’s heavy.

    I have a little S&W M&P 15-22. Love it. I want a “real” one though.
But it needs to be lightweight for a start.

If that's heavy grab his M1 Garand or M1A1. You will think you picked up a car....

I bought a 15-22 at the height of the 2012 panic in San Diego, paid a little over $600

Tacticooled the daylights out of it and sold it before I got upside down in accessories. I think I got $800 after owning it for 5 weeks.

I miss that gun a lot. Have thought about replacing it with 3 or 4 for the kids, but I think I could build 22lr ARs for less /same and allow those to grow over time.

I'm actually embarrassed by this now... but hey, some people still do this to their ARs

Don't be embarrassed. This one is mine lol. May not be pretty, but it is dang functional and a ton of fun! People still like to give me crap about the brake on it, but it was free and I didn't want the birdcage, so on it went.

Took "budget/bug-out/beater" a little too far

YES, i spray painted mags to match
YES, I painted them all the way up
YES, they sometimes fail to drop

I have a M&P hanging discreetly in the garage. The front sight base has gotten a bit rusty but Smith&Wesson finely machines the lower and upper. Excellent rifle. One of my favorites.

Same model as yours. I bought a carrying handle from army surplus and got rid of that pop up sight.

Pictures, yes. I almost forget it's there. I have it hanging by one zip tie. Easy enough to rip down. Lithuanian NATO in the mag.
