It appears that there may be considerably more here than one deputy failing to perform his duties.
Here's a quote from the person that shared and summarized the information and then a link to background information.

"This investigative reporter discovered that Broward County and the Miami-Dade school district entered into an agreement so that local police would not arrest students because the district wished to improve its statistics. As a consequence, the school district was allowed to boast that arrests of its students were down.
Considering that Nikolas Cruz was a beneficiary of that policy, we may safely conclude that he was out of prison and free to kill because the school district valued its public image above the safety of its students."

I can certainly understand the deputy's fear. Survival is a strong emotion. But what a terrible time/way to find out he could not master that fear and do his job.

Yep, can't excuse it, but do feel for him.

It's an understandable situation, no amount of training quite prepares you for the first time live fire starts coming your way.

something you see routinely in combat with new troops.

Ask any seasoned senior NCO or line Officer how many times he's had to kick a FNG's ass to do the one thing key to surviving a ground attack ... get your face out of the dirt and return fire.

Some never learn, to the detriment of everyone else.

Am I overreacting by thinking he should be on a suicide watch?

If I were him, I'd be selling everything I own, giving away or trashing what I couldn't, getting my sister set up in assisted living, and trying to conceive of a way that no one would ever find my body.

This is a level of dishonor with which I could not live.

Not according numerous LEO posting about this on another forum I belong to. It has evolved from what you said to now get in alone if you have to and confront the shooter ASAP.

    AustinN4,

Fwiw, there are here in "God's Country"/Texas, many small/rural departments where a "responding officer" may well be ALONE & NOT have any available "back up" to call. = In the mid-1970s, I was a city marshal for a small NETX town & one night "I got into a mess", got on the radio & called for anyone who could come to my aid, as I was "pinned down in a drainage ditch" by at least 4 armed criminals. -= Over 30 minutes later, I got help from a TX Game Warden & a Deputy Constable from another county.
(LOTS of "unpleasant things" can happen to a person in a half hour!!)

Not quite suicide watch, but he's under the supervision of a half-dozen armed guards according to some sources:

Totally agree, that's a level of dishonor I couldn't live with. But I don't think any of us would've done what he did (or didn't do) in that situation, either.

Now they were bound to have access to more than just their side arms.
Surely they carry ARs, and/or shotguns in their cars.
My son in law carries a department issued AR in his squad car at all times.

    ZXR9CAM,

Evidently NOT, as the Sheriff was on the 6PM news & said that his deputies must be qualified before being allowed to carry rifles.

    RACER X,

    DISGUSTING, imVho.

I'm far from a hero BUT money, marbles or chalk wouldn't have kept me outside while kids were being massacred, as I know that I wouldn't be able to live with myself afterward, if I hadn't at least tried.

Even in the days when my sole firearm at work while a city marshal was a 6-shot WWI-era .45ACP revolver, I would have tried to AMBUSH/kill the mass murderer.
(While revolver vs. rifle isn't an even fight, I would have done something, instead of hiding outside.)

ADDENDA to this comment and to #204 too: Fwiw, on the night that I got pinned-down in the ditch & had to wait a half-hour for help, I was SCARED SPITLESS & very lucky to not have been killed.
(I never went out on a call again with only a 6-shot revolver & a few extra rounds in my jacket pockets. That act on my part was simply arrogant/STUPID. =====> From then on, I took my personal Model 760 with an 8-shot Colyer Clip in .30-06 & extra rifle ammo with me. )

    yours, satx

    From link above:

"Sources from Coral Springs, Fla., Police Department tell CNN that when its officers arrived on the scene Wednesday, they were shocked to find three Broward County Sheriff’s deputies behind their cars with weapons drawn.

"The school’s armed resource officer, Broward County Sheriff’s Deputy Scot Peterson, was also outside. He resigned on Thursday after his failure to act was publicly revealed.

"The Coral Springs cops entered the building to engage the shooter on their own, before other Broward County deputies arrived, two of whom joined the police inside, the sources said."

Sounds like a failure on the part of the FBI and local LE. The whole situation is screwed up and libs are throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks. The cops at my old high school were brutes of men. I'm talking 6'5" former college linebackers! I'm not kidding, he was!

This entire deal is due to liberal incompetence and "feel good" measures that fail to acknowledge that there are shitbags in this world who don't give a damn about love and kindness.

Not everyone is "good at heart" and sometimes, folks need to look beyond their damned noses and see the world for what it really is.

If the issue doesn't go with their political narrative, they don't care. In their crooked minds, a gun bill looks better than mental health or education-security reform that would actually help the country
