Hi folks,
Nothing cool to share, mediawise. We made it to Lyttleton. Everything is good. I understand once we got into warmer water the leak stopped. Most of the science party has left for home but we are staying until the next expedition starts. Details keep changing but currently it appears we will stay at berth until March 8th. On that day the other crew arrives, I have a couple days of crossover to do with my relief and then I take a long flight home on the 10th. Come back to Auckland May 1st and do it all over again. I'll continue to post pics and other stuff here if I find something interesting, at least until the end of exp.

Y’all only do 2 months at a time?
Yes, mostly 2 months on, 2 months off. Tie-up/Lay-up periods can be different depending on length, a 2 month long tie-up would be split between the two crews usually. Like in August, after my next expedition is over, the other crew will get on, transit to Subic Bay, Philippines and work as the ship goes into dry dock. That will take a month total, then I will come back and work the remaining month when the JR is wet again and tied up. Tie-ups are our opportunity to perform major maintenance and upgrades as that is the only time the ship is not in operation.
Yeah, well what can I say. I'm not a radio expert so how would I know.
No, sometimes I use improper terminology without thinking. It makes a sound (a ping if you will) that our ASK system can pick up via hydrophones on the ship.

Apparently via VLF and ULF; also acoustically. When surfaced, with a regular radio.

Yes, they also have a bouy cable that they can run to the surface.
Yes. But if you are listening to sounds under water it is sonar.
I'm only familiar with ULF. It can transmit radio waves through the water, but it is really, really low bandwidth. Usually subs on any kind of mission pretty much keep transmissions to a minimum.
Radio use in a submarine is infrequent, any radio transmission can give away their location and location is often closely guarded.
