Harrel is by far the most un-biased of them. Gives you the inforrnation and lets you make the decision.
I also really like the guy on "shooting the bull" for various ammo. information and demonstration.

As much as you can afford. I admit, my minimum goal was 1,000 per gun but have since gotten way past that. Last time I checked ammo never gets cheaper so, I say,"As much as possible without taking away from your responsibilities".

I don't have a whole bunch of weapons or ammo, or food.
I have a different plan....kill the attackers, then take their guns and ammo, and just steal food at gunpoint!

I'm not too worried. Crimminals are afraid to come down my street.

I/we shoot several 1000 rounds a month of various calibers, so I generally have:
+-5k of .22, mostly LR
3k-4k 9mm, 40, 45acp, 5.56 and .308- this is reloads only- i'm not counting store-bought ammo
couple 100 45LC, 30-06, 6.5cm, 6mm cm
5 each 5 gal buckets 9mm, 40, 45, 5.56 cases for reloading, 2 buckets 308, lots less but still bunches of the rest of my calibers, and I lost track of the powder, primers, and bullets I have on hand... have to keep the 1050s fed and happy

I have 1k 9mm and 1k 223 that I leave untouched and unopened. There is probably around 5k in 22. I buy what I use and leave those aside. The 9mm and 223 are defensive rounds. If I live past shooting those 2k rounds, chances are I can pick up what's left from the people that didn't get me. They say if you're keeping quite, you'll never use those 1k in years. If you're actively involved in gun fights, either you're number will get pulled sooner or you can enjoy the spoils of your victory. It sure would be weird if you both ran out of ammo at the exact same time though wouldn't it

It happens, happened to me in fact and then my Basic Training kicked in and he got a butt stroke to the lower jaw, right above his chin, it snapped his jaw and unless he found a good doc he is still suckin his meals thru a straw somewhere.It sure would be weird if you both ran out of ammo at the exact same time though wouldn't it

How much is enough? I guess it depends on what you're expecting in the way of need. I mean, where do you live, how often are you going to have to defend yourself, etc.
I think for most folks, a thousand rounds of ammo for your primary weapons is plenty. I mean, you won't be target practicing for all kinds of reasons.
However, having more is always good and practicing now will rotate the stock - shoot and replenish your supply - first in, first out.
The only other consideration is having the ammo for barter. .22LR in particular but also common calibers like 9MM and 5.56x45 will be very valuable in a shtf situation.
