Like the OP, I have a 10/22 Takedown. I put a UTG 3-9x32mm Bugbuster on mine. It has an adjustable objective, illuminated mil-dot reticle, and comes with medium height QD rings. I mounted it using UTG's low profile rail that fits the 10/22 receiver. This rig allows the scope to stay on the rifle when it's put in the storage bag. Also, once the Takedown's adjustment ring was set up per the Ruger manual, I found that I could assemble and disassemble the rifle and even remove and reinstall the scope without having to rezero.

The bugbuster mentioned above is the scope of choice for those takedowns over at rugerforum if that helps at all.

If you like Vortex, which I do. The Crossfire II 2-7x32 Rimfire can be had for $129 any day and less on sale.

I think the vortex will go on my fixed rifle as I build it up for precision shooting. The bugbuster will go on my takedown.

I appreciate all of the advice, there is a lot of good stuff here. I have already been looking at the Ace in the Hole and the Tec Sights as my M1 has the peep sight so something similar would be great if I stay with irons.

Before posting this, I was leaning toward a red dot since I figured it would work better for the plinking I normally do. Now I'm not so certain. I have to admit, not having any experience at all with mounting or using scopes, they intimated me a bit.

As far as price goes, one of those Vortex rimfire scopes would be doable and something I will look into. Now I just need to figure out the best way to go about mounting one on the included rail without breaking the bank.
Not hard at all. It is good to have a torque driver so you set the screws correctly. Lapping the rings is probably not necessary but I did it on mine just to practice. It was the first scope I mounted myself.

You could mount the scope without a level. All you need is a plumb line to set the reticle to vertical.

Thanks for the advice on the Bugbusters. I haven't seen those before.

And thank you for the videos. Those look quite helpful. Do I need a Tipton vise for a 10/22 or would something in a bench vise work? I don't see getting into long range or precision shooting so I'm not sure how useful a Tipton would be.

No Swift 22, I bought one at academy and out it on a 10/22 and the cross actually rotated inside the scope before I got threw the first magazine, garbage. Got a Vortex for it, and it's awesome.

I have a Nikon Prostaff specifically designed for rimfire that works pretty well. I use fix mounts, but I am using a non-break down 10/22, too. Kind of thinking about getting one of those breakdowns, either the light or regular or maybe just one of those breakdowns from Henry that fit in the stock.

Look into Mueller scopes. They are a lot less expensive than most, but they are sharp and clear. I have a 1-4 "Dot" scope on my 10/22 and it is a perfect match. I seldom turn the dot on - it is a red-dot - because it works just as well with a black dot (power off).
I highly recommend Mueller scopes http://muelleroptics.com/. I just checked their web site - they are on-sale!

An inexpensive scope will work on the 10-22. A red dot option is a big help.

    Right now
I have a 10/22 Takedown that's a ton of fun to shoot but it's no secret the stock sights are abysmal. Even with my relatively young eyes, the brass bead is nearly impossible to see in other than bright light.

I've been considering either putting a set of aftermarket sights on and continuing to shoot with sights or putting some sort of optic on there. All of my shooting with it right now is plinking at ~20 yards at the range though I plan to occasionally take it out to a friend's farm for plinking and bullseye shoot at less than 100 yards.

I don't have a ton of experience with rifles and know very little about optics in general beyond the basics of what a red dot, holographic and scope are. :)

What I am looking for are some recommendations for a somewhat inexpensive optic including mounting options for shorter range shooting.

Thank you in advance for your patience with the noob.

Right now CDNN has Bushnell scopes on sale for 55.00 bucks.

If it were a full size rifle, I would go with a mueller apv 4-14x. Otherwise a bushnell trs 25 or primary arms dot will serve you well within the range you specified.

There are a bunch of sub 30 dollar dots you could buy. I have tried several and even tried a couple on an AR. They add significant fun factor and speed-in-acquisiton but you will forfiet some accuracy. Cheaper dots are 4 Moa, the high end stuff is 1 Moa.

Eotechs, aimpoints and holosuns are on a much higher tier of performance. Possibly overkill for a weekend plinker.

It seems the more you pay the smaller and sharper the dot gets.

I just purchased a Leupold FX-l fixed power 4x28 rimfire scope from OpticsPlanet. My old Simmons lasted about 25 years so i was ready for an upgrade. Its going on a stainless Marlin 60. Cant wait to see how it works. The guns already a tack driver with the iron sights!

I picked up a Vortex Sparc II during the Academy sale feeding frenzy I'm going to try out the next time I make it to the range.
