A Facebook photo of a National Guard sniper staying perfectly still as a snake crawls across the barrel of his rifle has become a recruiting tool for the Alabama Army National Guard.

The photo, taken April 7 at northwest Florida’s Eglin Air Force Base, which houses a training area for the Alabama National Guard, shows Pfc. William Snyder, all but hidden by a ghillie suit and natural camouflage, as a non-poisonous black racer snake crawls across the barrel of his semiautomatic rifle, just in front of its telescopic sight.

“It’s by far our best-performing post,” said Maj. Andrew Richardson, deputy public affairs officer for the Alabama National Guard. Richardson said the post has prompted responses from people interested in joining the Alabama National Guard, as well as people who just want to find out more about the Guard... (full story at link).

My father in law served with Marine Force Recon, though he is rather tight lip about anything specific and such, he has talked about the conditions he had to deal with while being a part of it. Among other things, snakes and all sorts of creepy crawlies while remaining undetected are some of the highlights he has talked about.

Of course that is a photo and not a video.

The next frame could be the sniper beating the snake to a bloody pulp with his rifle butt...

I wonder if the aspiring new recruits understand how extremely hot a ghillie suit is? They're wonderful in under the dry hot Texas sun. It's like wearing a thick quilt as you're laying on the ground. The only fresh air is received by your face. It fools everything but mosquitos. More power to Alabama....and a snake trying to find a cool place to chill out.
