You live in a 3-story townhome, it's midnight, and you're asleep in the master bedroom on the 3rd floor (along with your S.O.). Your home alarm goes off and jolts you out of bed. What do you do now?

I'm asking this on behalf of a friend. Haha...not really. Happened to me last night, and I realized my planning sucks. Thankfully, it was a "false" alarm...something fell in the 1st floor bedroom and set off the motion detector.

Also curious about one specific issue: do you disable the alarm so you can hear what the hell might be going on?

Sounds like a pucker moment for sure.

By disable, do mean stop an audible alarm from blaring away?

So, what did you take with you to investigate?

well if the alarm is reliable the first thing is pick up bedside gun and flashlight dial 911 and let them know your alarm is going off you are armed and are barricaded in your 3ed floor bedroom. Aim shot gun at door and wait for police response.

By "disable" I really meant "disarm"...punch in code to turn of the siren. And that just made me have a thought...I think there's a way to turn the siren off but it still keeps ringing through to the monitoring company. Need to check my alarm manual. Duh

I took a G19 and a Surefire E2D Defender. After the dust settled, "you know who" asked me, "why did you take a pistol instead of your AR?" That was another "duh" moment.

Oh, and she was out of bed with her G19 in hand just as fast as I was. Lol

That sure seems like the smartest, safest thing to do (and I kinda expected that would be the most common response). Problem is, no one has ever accused me of being smart, or safe. Ok, that was just a bit of self-deprecating humor. Lol

I think I would wait a small amount of time before disabling the sound alarm. The sound alone may be a deterrent to small time criminals. I think its a good thing that the signal still goes to the company. You never know when a false alarm ends up being the real thing.

This is what I actually wanted to ask, but didn't want to put out there.

Best tactical model of course, but in this case would have possibly meant waiting X amount of time for police to respond, and it would turn out to be a false alarm.
I'm thinking a majority of us would have done what you did.

Yeah, I'm actually not going to stop and get dressed.
I have a different setup/situation, I would want to get to the doorway and be looking down the hall as quickly as possible.

I know Cam. Just funning ya.
I'd be up and rolling in the PJ's as well.
