Honestly not sure how to describe it, it's been a while since I've handled it. Just couldn't find a comfortable grip on it. My grandfather doesn't like it much either, but he bought it before he knew much about guns.
I'm trying to think of guns that might work for ya. I will say that if you go with the pt111 it's not the worse thing. I didn't have any malfunctions in the one I test fired. The manufacturing is rough.

Maybe look at the ruger lcr line. Sub 500 revolvers that all come with a good rubber grip.

I thought about a revolver but I prefer a semi-automatic. My wife is really into revolvers, she wants a judge for her carry.

When it's cooler out I like carrying my .357 in my motorcycle jacket. I also carry a couple moon clips for reloads. The jacket is very heavy when I go to put it on, but I don't notice the weight much when wearing it.

Have you ever tried a PPQ?
I'd be interested in a comparison.

    Yeah I’ve fired a buddy’s PPQ.
Nice gun with an excellent trigger. But it was a while ago and without doing a side to side comparison, I don’t think my memory is reliable enough to come to any conclusions.

Surprisingly, this PPS is almost the same size as my EC9S. I thought it would be a bit larger. The trigger feels great (similar to what I recall for the PPQ) and ergos so far feel better than the Ruger.

I’ll have to put some rounds thru the PPS first, but I’m thinking the Ruger will be up for sale soon
