OK, here's the scenario: I don't NEED another rifle. I also don't NEED a new caliber (which would also mean new reloading dies, etc.) The more I see about the 6.5 Creedmoor, the more tempted I am to jump on the bandwagon. I don't have lease or anything that would let me use that long distance capability, and even if I did, I've got a couple of sub-MOA 30 cal rifles that would more than suffice. Of course, a new rifle means new optics and such, and very likely I'd have to unload some other firearms to cover the expense. (Those of you who have done that know how hard it is to part with firearms.) I ran across a Begara the other day that was just begging me to take it home.

    Talk me out of this.

I've become slightly less interested over the last 6 months I've researched it.

My original plan was to get a 1000 yd shooter. My new plan is to get one my wife and I can both shoot. I've bounced back and forth between a Browning or Bargara vs getting an AR. Leaning AR now.

It's a light recoil rifle that my small wife can handle. And, I'm just interested in the AR myself.

Every American Civilian should own an AR-15 and know how to shoot and maintain it.

I've heard good stuff about the Begaras. I bought a Savage in 6.5 CM and love it. As Vaq said, it's almost boring at a few hundred yards. Get it - you'll love it too. Did that help?

Vaquero nailed it. Unless you can stretch it out it gets boring. Making hits on steel at 1400 yards is fun and rewarding though. I have Savages but I almost bought a Bergara barreled action last time. Might still one day.

This is my problem...I can say I don't need it but as I'm saying no my body is acting on its own filling out another 4473.

Per ops question...6.5 cm is a tactical fad. When I look at 7mm08, 6.5 Swede, 308, 270, etc. I don't get excited about it.
I think it has proven it is not a fad.

Not even going to say no you don't need/want it.
6.5 is a serious round. I love it.
Problem is, where we live finding anything past 400 yards is a challenge unless I drive 4 hours north or south. Sucks. 400 is a yawn for this round.

It's proven it's a great round. It's still a fad. As with many things gun related, it's popularity goes up when the military comes up.
It is over 11 years old and the military has just started showing interest. They are late comers to the game.

For at least the last at least 5 years its popularity has skyrocketed and is only going up. New componants, ammo, and rifles continue to flood the market.

You and I must have very different definitions of fad.

Lol my definition, from being in the industry, is from watching people. Listening to people talk at shows. The cm and any new cartridge will have issues growing in popularity by waiting for people to discover it. Take the 300 whisper. They didn't have the funding that 300 blackout had to generate a buzz. The 6.5 cm is exploding because it's popular. How does that happen? You generate a fad. Here today gone tomorrow. Sometimes cartridges resurface in popularity. If marketing is pushing it hard and if people think they can't do long range shooting without it, its a fad.

I think it's a great cartridge. The older I get I just don't get hyped too easy anymore. A lot of cartridges fill the same use. One I haven't played with that I want someday is the 280 Ackley.

Edit: besides op wants to be talked out of it. I'm trying. Jk. Lol. Seriously though, all my babbling was trying to point out was most of us that are into guns look at a new cartridge and look at the data. We look at its capabilities and we try it. We don't need Larry Vickers or mall ninja youtubers to tell us its great.

I have to say that I would also classify the 6.5 as a fad. I've seen lots of fads come and go - and some stick around but just don't generate the amount of press. When I was young, the hot thing was the 270 and 7 mm mag. Every gun mag was covering one or the other every month. The 7 mm became a "have to own" for awhile. Now? It's still around but nobody is touting it as the coolest round ever.

The .338 Lapua was certainly a fad, and it's still around, but pretty much limited to the very hard core long distance guys.

Perhaps tonight I'll dream of making those 1,200 yard shots with that decked-out Bergara - and in the morning I'll look at my bank account and weep for the reality of Monday morning. Am I willing to sell off a Weatherby .300 WBY to finance this? Hmmm.
