People lose weight when the expend more calories than they eat over a period of time.
That is the science behind it.
That is true but there's also science that says certain foods process and digest easier and faster and turn into nutrients and others that dont process easily and turn into junk that the body can't utilize. 1200 calories of protien isn't the same as 1200 calories of carbs or 1200 calories of sugar. you'll feel sluggish and not want to work out if you eat 1200 calories of junk food. good for you healthy food like veggies fruits and lean proteins like chicken will leave you feeling energetic and full of energy that doesn't make you crash.

I downloaded the "Myfitnesspal" app on my phone. you scan the barcode on your food or you can search restaurants by location and it counts your calories carbs fat protien iron vitamin a vitamin c and sodium and sugar and a lot of othe stuff... ive been doing that for a little over a week and ive lost 5 lbs so far. we'll see how well it works after a month...

I use the Lose It app for Android. It does similar calorie counting and it's free. Highly recommended.

    A calorie is a calorie..period.

Now if you want to talk about Macros, we will. A gram of fat contains about 9 calories and a gram of carbs is about 4 same as a gram of protein.

Protein is more satiable of the three, which means it makes you feel full, longer and it more complex and your body actually burns more calories digesting it.

Your body eventually breaks it all down to glucose.(except for small amounts of dietary fiber) ..that's the simplest form of energy and it is released into your bloodstream, then shortly after, insulin.

I will stand by my statement that if you wish to lose weight, it is basic calories in verses calories expended.
If you decide to only eat 1600 calories a day to loose weight, it doesn't matter if you eat that in Snickers bars or bananas as far as the weight loss goes.
A professor of human nutrition at Kansas state proved it when he lost 27 lbs in 2 months eating nothing but junk food like twinkies
    http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html

However, your body composition could suffer, as well as other negative health impacts if you do this long term. It depends on your genetics

I lost 80 lbs in a year just restricting calories
I learned how to eat certain foods with less calories so I would get full.

Problem is when you do what I did, you lose pounds and that's mostly fat but some muscle as well

Now that I am in the gym building it back, I eat 1.2 grams of protein per lb lean mass

I eat nutrient dense and high protein.

So about 35 percent of my calories each day come from protein. I dont worry too much about carbs and fats, since my protein is so high and I'm eating about 2350 calories they tend to keep well in check

    Lots of good info here.
Weight Watchers tracking app worked well for my wife and I. My wife went to meetings eventually. I didn't.

I hope it doesn't sound too strange, but eventually you kind of get used to being hungry and it isn't that difficult.

Congrats. I've lost 28 lbs since last June. My goal is 200#. I looked up BMI for some crazy reason. For me at 5'10" I need to be 174 or under to be a "normal weight". My wife said I'll look sick that skinny. I haven't weighed that since I was 18.

We started a informal biggest looser at work with just the guys on shift. This is helping to keep me/us motivated to stick with any diet plan

There is a difference between true hunger and appetite or craving.
I dont know of that is what you are describing or not.
I learned that when I'm truly hungry I I know it and that's not the same feeling as just a passing craving

    BMI is just stupid
The only people who fit into that category of normal live in places like Sudan
I'm 6'6" tall and at 245 BMI still says I'm overweight and I'm down to 21% body fat

I've been doing intermittent fasting for about a month and have lost about 6 lbs now.
Basically, you have an 8 hour window to eat and then you fast for 16 hours.
During the fast - only black coffee, un-sweet tea and water.
In the 8 hour window you can eat whatever you want (don't get crazy) but get some nutritious food in there.
I have black coffee in the morning for breakfast and it kills the hunger till brunch.
My kryptonite has always been sweets, so I have a good brunch and good dinner with a little something sweet after and it has been pretty easy so far.

I thought the BMI charts were a farce. I'm not sure why they exist like they do. It just seems unrealistic.

I limit carbs sugars and fats and try to get most of my calories from protein. i've been doing this for about 2 weeks and i've lost only 3 lbs. hopefully it'll start to pick up a bit.

    They are.

Back in the day, when I had single-digit body fat, the BMI “test” showed I was overweight.

I it seems to assume any weight over their absurdly low “ideal” is fat and does not allow for muscle mass.

I did some changes almost two years ago. While I feel 1000 times better, the weight loss was marginal, and I gained most of it back.

Had two people tell me about the Wheat Belly book. So last Monday I went on a gluten free diet. Its been a week, but I already can tell my pants fit differently. I'm not eating less, just no wheat products.

The explanation of the book is kind of interesting. We have all heard of GMOs. I grew up on a farm, so I understand the why. They made the wheat heads bigger, so you feed more people with the same acreage. But the head was so big the head drooped. So they shortened the stalk so it would not fall over. It was that GMO that caused the problems. The gluten allegies that people have can be traced to that modification.

My granddaughter has a gluten allergy. She gets eczema-like sores / rashes when she eats any wheat product. I know a few people that have the same issue.

A friend and his wife put their family on a gltuen free diet. After a week their daughter's eczema disappeared after having it pretty much her entire life.

My wife has on and off, been on a no-bread diet over the years. Its been amazing to see her lose weight so fast. I thought it was just the carbs, but there is apparently more to it than that.

I'll give updates to my progress.

This thread has been quiet for a while, especially so early in the new year when we are all supposed to make resolutions to diet and work out so we can change from disgusting to obese!

I will start off the 2019 update by sharing that on January 20 I restarted on the Keto diet limiting myself to 20 grams of carbs per day. No workout, just normal yard work around the house. Started at 231 and today, 36 days later, am down 23 lbs to 208. Went from tight size 40 Wranglers to loose size 38 and looking forward to digging out my old 36's in the next week or so.

    Routine is something like this..

Breakfast: Whataburger sausage/cheese/egg sandwich with no bun - Jimmy Dean egg scramble with bacon/sausage - or a scrambled egg at home topped with cheddar cheese and avocado slices on the side. Sometimes go to a diner and have two poached eggs and two link sausages or I have about 4 0z of Paleonola granola with coconut milk.

Lunch: Visit the local pizza buffet and have the salad bar with lettuce, olives, broccoli, cheese and ranch dressing then pull the cheese and pepperoni off two slices of pizza - Whataburger double with cheese and all the veggies but no bun - Mission Carbsmart tortilla with cheese and meat - package of StarKist premade tuna salad - hotdog split and grilled with melted cheese, pickle relish and mustard.

Dinner: No dinner, just snacks like sugar free Jello with whipped cream, plate of olives with pickle chips and cheese, cheese quesadilla with low carb tortilla, or pork rinds.

For options on lunch and dinner I always keep 3-4 of the Atkins frozen entrees on hand...the ones with 4 - 6 grams of carbs. The chicken alfredo with broccoli is my favorite. I also have a box of the Atkins peanut butter cups to snack on one at a time while watching tv.

Lots of options and not too hard to stay within reasonable limits. Just drink lots of water and keep overall calorie intake balanced with the low carbs.

Good to know, and helps me out. Thanks.

Started the Keto routine just after Christmas.

In the AM, I'm drinking bulletproof coffee (MCT oil first, then later a cup with coconut oil just to get the lauric acid); JD sausage, and two pasture raised eggs, either fried in coconut oil, or scrambled with full fat cheese.

Tuna salad, or sardines at lunch, along with homemade guacamole and celery sticks used as chips.

Been eating soup (home made, with some type of fatty meat) and salad at supper for years, so that fits in nicely. I replaced all the low fat dressing with full fat Caesar or Creamy Ceasar.

Biggest problem for me so far is, no longer having a gallbladder, getting a the recommended protein/fat balance. Wife hates fat and buys accordingly.

So far down 15 lbs, and feel better than in years ... didn't really understand just how much carbs/sugar can wreck havoc on your immune system/ body chemistry.

I am currently losing 10 lbs in 8 weeks or less and I am eating around 170 grams of carbs per day.
No reason to restrict one of your key macronutrients like that.

For about two years I have been making lifestyle changes, not really any particular diet. Started at about 280.

Stopped drinking sodas, lost 8 lbs.
Stopped drinking beer, lost about 12 lbs.
Reduced portions, limited red meat to 5 times a week. lost about 10 lbs.
Went on a gluten free diet after reading Wheat Belly, and I am down to around 240.

Big thing for me is I am under 250 for the first time in over 20 years. My knees and ankles don't hurt as much. And I feel better physically than I have since I was around 30.

My size 42 pants were tight, and my belly hanging over them. Now I have to cinch my belt to keep them up, and I could likely fit three of my legs in them now.
