My company gives me points which I can exchange for different Gift cards, one of the useful stores in that seem to be Cabelas. I used some of the cards to by a firearm. I found out that overall price is $100 more than what I would have got at local gun store.

I have a year's worth of points saved up and can get gift cards. Is there anything of good bargain at Cabelas that I could use these. I don't want to use these for firearms as they are very very expensive.

Any of you guys who shop at Cabelas, let me know what things to look at.

    Gunz are icky.
    Watch the website.
Sometimes they will have items on sale or other special deals.
I've seen the same thing as you. Big C is just high on their guns. Once in a while they have specials on them.
Since the cards aren't really money out of your pocket why not just get the gun you like from there?

I’ve bought pistols at Cabela’s in Allen, TX for either free or very low cost. I’ve caught manufactures rebates (Beretta, $50 rebate), Cabela’s veterans’ discount ($50) and the accumulation of points from my Cabela’s Club Visa. Gift cards and/or points can also be used for ammo purchases. I caught ‘green tip’ ammo on sale one time (with the plastic ammo box) which was as cheap (cost per round) as any mail order available - even using AmmoSeek.com. If you’re patient and use ‘due diligence’, I haven’t found it hard to spend my money there!

They frequently have good deals on their house-badged Savage 12FV rifles. I think you'll have a hard time buying a better rifle for the money.

Not quite sure how free points = overpriced, but if it's just the principle of the thing, then I understand.

As others have said. Watch for sales or guns being discontinued from inventory. Besides firearms, bullets, reloading stuff, cold weather gear, clothing, heck save up and buy a boat. Just watch fort he sales.

you can always sell the cards on ebay for face value and sometimes people pay more than face value don't ask me why because I have no clue.

and if you get scammed don't come looking for me lol

Just trying to stretch my dollar out. If my cards are about $300 and if I buy ammo which is say $10 more expensive vs spending it on a gun which is $100 more expensive. I rather pay cash and buy gun from a cheaper place and use the gift card for ammo. This way i get cheaper gun and more ammo. :weights:

Cabelas reminds me of the place where a person goes that just got invited to go hunting or fishing for the first time, or someone that's not that into it or just getting back into it. I'm not saying I don't stop in when I go by, I like looking around, just usually isn't my first choice if I need some thing. I have bought lots of stuff though I didn't need from them, as in I Ammo and scopes because they do have some really good deals on both some times, if you look on gundeals.com they usually post some good deals from there.

There are certain items I buy at Cabela's. I generally try and catch those items on sale when I can. Cartridge boxes, S&B Primers, powder on occasion, and of course I check the Bargain Cave.

Ebay has buyer protection and it works as I have used it.

I bought both my safes at Cabelas when they were on sale. No regrets.

Just a heads up. When bass pro bought Cabelas, they axed the veterans discount on firearms and ammo. Confirmed this at Allen and Fort Worth stores

OP, wait for a sale or look at the used gun section. I do the same thing and I typically wait for a sale on the optics or AR mags

Thanks MTA89, that’s good to know. I’ve been waiting for them [Bass Pro] to announce an end to the Cabela’s VISA Club points program. So far, they’re keeping that in place. I guess it won’t surprise me if they get out of that business too. At that time, guess I’ll have to go get my last “free” gun.

Hell of a thing to do! Cabela's is not very close or easy for me to get to so I don't "shop" there but I do have a Cabela's CC I use occasionally.

I’ve had all my monthly “recurring” charges (phone bill, electric, gas, etc.) set up to go on my Cabela’s cc from the inception of their VISA program. It’s no ‘get rich quick’ scheme, but for my “fixed” expenses, which I have regardless of how they’d be paid, over time, it’s been worthwhile. In fact, I’ve got enough freebie points saved right now, I’m starting to entertain the idea of yet another “free” pistol buy. It’s my main cc which is paid to zero balance each month, so it’s literally cost me nothing.

I was so proud of my first free pistol buy (a Beretta). That is, until the cashier told me, “oh(!), that’s nothing, some guy the other day spent his $9K credit, buying a new boat.” It will be interesting to see if Bass Pro keeps their hand in the till of the financing market. I suspect it was a money-maker for Cabela’s but, of course, not in their main line of business. Bass Pro could be interested in it.....(or not...); so it’ll be interesting to see if Bass Pro continues with it.

I have and use regularly, the Bass Pro MasterCard which gives me cash back on everything, and double in their store.

OP, my employer has a similar reward/recognition program and last fall I cashed in my points for $500 in Cabelas gift cards. I purchased a couple Black Friday items but spent the majority of it on 10-22 upgrades (barrel and stock) as these are things I would not have done with "my own money". If that makes sense.

On a side note: Now that Bass Pro shops bought Cabelas, I wonder if gift cards are interchangeable?

    Cheers!

I remember reading something a while back that the Cabela's line of scopes were actually rebranded Meoptas (sp?), which are supposed to be moderately high-end Czech made scopes as I understand it (I'm not a scope guru so take that fwiw). Can't remember where I read this but I'm thinking it might have been a post on this or another similar gun forum from a former Cabela's employee.

Anyway, if you're in need of a scope that might be something to consider.
