Uh oh...not this topic. Lol. Jk.which would be better and which would be the best ? overall ?
Yeah. 100 percent this. There are positive and negative aspects concerning both, but don't be fooled by Internet lore such as the AK isn't accurate or that the 5.56 round isn't as lethal. Neither is true.
Truly the only correct answer is an AR chambered in 7.62x39.
Of all the people on the internet or in person that I've encountered only one seems to be fair and balanced when it comes to gun topics. That man? Paul Harrell. He presents the facts in a scientific manner and then lets YOU Decide.....
AK vs AR platforms.
POWER
ACCURACY
VERSUS BODY ARMOR
Also unlike most yahoos on the internet
1) Paul served as a firearms instructor in both the marines and army
2) Paul is a national shooting champion in several categories including pistol and black powder
3) Paul has actually, unfortunately, had to kill someone in self defense as a civilian. http://www.wallowa.com/20070619/harrell-freed-of-manslaughter-charges-in-troy-shooting
Glad you're still with us.I'm sorry but I don't post much as I'm not on a computer very often. With that said, I've, well, I've shot people with a few series of firearms. M16s, CAR15s, and AK47s mainly. As others have said, the 223/5.56 round has come a long way since Vietnam and the AR15/M16 has undergone vast improvements. With all of that said, during the final week of my second tour I was shot by a Cambodian sniper with an AK47. I took the round through the lower part of my colon and it did it's intended damage. I went through my 5th, and hopefully last, colon surgery in 2007. I've seen death, faced it down a few times, caused death, and have seen the end results of both rounds along with various other implements. Usually with a competent shooter either will work okay, usually. I live on 70 acres, mostly wooded, in n.e. Texas and in doing so often encounter feral hogs at one of our lakes. I'm NOT an animal hunter and wouldn't bother them IF they'd leave me/mine alone. Sometimes they will but often times they don't. I have a couple of ARs and such as well as two AK47s. The times that I know I'll have to dispatch a hog are the times I'll go for an AK. It's never failed me, the rifle or the round, and I've always succeeded in two shots or less.
Of course, as the others have said, it all depends on you and your needs. For a law enforcement/personal defense rifle I'd choose an AR. Better balance, better ergonomics, more options. The ARs of today are much more refined than the still rather crude AKs, but it's just what you'd prefer I'd guess.
Hopefully I've not bored yall too much and thanks for your time. Good luck choosing!
