Meh, rather get a Savage Hog Hunter than either one of them.
I looked at that and you are very correct I just don’t want a 20” barrel.

But, if I was going to go Savage, I would rather get the Scout Rifle, I like the peep sites on that gun and it comes with the Accu Stock and Accu Trigger , I think its a model 110 with a 16.5” threaded barrel

    Bad to the bone.

That is sharp. I wasn't aware that was available in 223.

For what it's worth - A buddy of mine just got one of the Mossberg MVP's. After shooting it, I thought it was a lower class rifle compared to the Ruger.

Actually, I bought my MVP way before the Ruger copied it. But if I were buying today I would have to compare and handle them both. One thing I see right away is the MVP comes with both a rail and open sights, whereas the Ruger only comes with a rail.

I like the Rugers rail system for a full size scope if wanted
The Savge's scout rifle has a forward mounted optics rail that might need a pistol scope to work for the eye relief
I need to look at that closer

Yep, scout mounts don't work well for me. The Mossberg and Ruger mounts are better for me.
