It would be difficult to overlook the epidemic of depression that has struck the United States over the past decades. The CDC recently found that death by suicide was up more than 30% and the use of antidepressants has vaulted 65% in the past 15 years.

There are many different theories about this increase. Everything from internet addiction to the Trump presidency to environmental causes has been blamed. Some believe it’s always been like this but that the stigma has lessened and more people are getting help.

But now there’s one more possible cause that needs to be considered. New research has shown that more than 200 medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, can increase the likelihood of depression and depressive symptoms. And when two or more of these drugs are combined, the potential for depression increases even more.

Note - Yeah, I get the joke. I apologize in advance for the sober (pun intended:)) response.
they say that alcohol is a depressant...but it always cheers me up!
Seriously, it is a depressant. The problem with alcohol is that the first thing it depresses is the part of the brain responsible for inhibition. Everybody needs a little inhibition most of the time; alcohol lowers it. More alcohol then depresses more of the brain.

With me, that mean that one drink makes me the outgoing life of the party. Two or three puts me to sleep.

With some people, alcohol removes their internal inhibition against acting like an idiot or becoming violent. Those people really shouldn't drink.

Just like the 200 drugs referenced by the OP, alcohol is a drug that, in moderation, usually does good things. It also is occasionally a real disaster.

they say that alcohol is a depressant...

    Ethanol is a CNS depressant.
    Ethanol does not cause depression.

Not even remotely the same thing.

    Ya.
    Confusing terminology depresses me.

Seriously.....Anthony Bourdain's suicide shook me! Someone whom I admired and really thought he had it all and had his s**t together.
We know so little about CNS neurotransmitter chemistry!
