Yep. I consider it an expendable item.
Gets lost or Bozo swipes it? Meh.

Too true. I carry $450 bucks worth of Benchmade knife. An Infidel OTF dagger in D2 steel. My rear end tenses up if I set some place and forget about for a couple of hours. Neighbor asked to borrow it to strip some speaker wires. I told him to go into his kitchen and find something. I'm not handing you an automatic dagger to Jerry rig your bass speakers. That's a no-go at this station.

I actually know at least one of my friends that has a high dollar knife, carries it, but hardly ever (if at all) uses it because he doesn't want to take the chance he will scar it up or dull it.

Mine is beat to hell. Everything but the blade. I pop beer bottle tops with it. The handle is all scared up. I just don't want somebody skinning wires with it and cutting a finger off. I keep every knife I have razor sharp. I have a bald place on my leg from checking the edge.

This knife definitely isn't a pocket queen.

A lot of guys will know a LOT more about knives than me. That being said, unless you're just a complete snob you don't need to spend even more than 50 dollars these days to get a GOOD knife. The steel is the key... 440 anything is shit and you shouldn't even look at it. There are "super" steels out there that will push the price of the knife, and I'm not joking, above 500 dollars. Don't even waste your time. I carry a KA-BAR Dozier.. it's 20 bucks and made of Aus8 steel. Aus8 is a Japanese steel that kicks the crap out of any of the 440s and CM145 and D2 Steelss... I guarantee to find a knife better than this you'll pay a LOT more money. I've been EDCing this knife for about 2 years. I've only had to oil it once.

Here's the knife at knifecenter... (you can also buy it on amazon) https://www.knifecenter.com/item/KA...-3-inch-Satin-Plain-Blade-Black-Zytel-Handles

Here's a lot more info from a guy that knows a hell of a lot more about steel and knives than I ever hope to.

    http://blog.bladeops.com/review-of-aus-8-stainless-steel.html

Here's a video by a pretty respected knife reviewer.

I know for a fact that the pelvis bone on a whitetail deer will tear the living $hit out the serrations on a 440c blade. It'll round them off. I tore the hell out of Benchmade 522 doing that. I royally messed the knife up. I was knee deep in bloody dirt and gut stank. Things needed to get done.

I've also broke two other 522's. Snapped a chunk out the middle of the blade on the edge. Another I broke about 1/4" off the tip. All were 440c. Benchmade put a new blade in the chipped one. The broken one is still in it's box somewhere. Benchmade won't warranty that so I'd have to buy a blade. I've owned/own three of the 522's. I've owned three automatics. Broke the spring in one, sold the other, carry the third. They've been ast34 steel on two. D2 on the third. The ast34 an absolute bit#h to sharpen and harder to break. D2 is pretty close but it will get rust spots. You can't leave stuff on the blade or it'll spot up. Ast34 stays pretty.

440c can take a scary edge, it's easy to sharpen, and it's an all around good steel. It's also easy to break.

    .

You my friend need the Gerber mini-paraframe knife. Or as I like to call it, the "butt-hole knife." Its the only knife I actually carry every day, everywhere I go. Though I am on # 8 or something like that due to going to airports and then finding it in my pocket. For $10, it goes in the trash and I buy another when I return.

You don't have to bust up that pelvic bone, cut around the anus with the butt-hole knife, as far in as possible, then move to the normal cleaning in the gut area. After most of the stuff is out, but still attached, you use the knife to cut the inside of the channel inside the pelvis, then it simply pulls out. Pretty easily I might add.

Been using that method for over a decade, and its much easier than busting or sawing the pelvis. For field dressing, its perfect. Its the only knife I use for field dressing, and I've done it on whitetail, mule deer and axis deer.

    You're welcome.

I have recently began getting some knives, I got the smith and wesson tactical knife, some bowie knife, looking at Kbar. When I went to NRA convention, there were some knife vendors who were selling it at $200 knives. I cannot find a good answer for why some of these knives, especially tactical/carry knives are $100+. The knives I have feels strong and can cut through a few stuff easily. Am i missing on any facts for spending the $100 + or is it the just difference between a $500 glock gun vs $2000 STI gun. If that is the case a glock quality is enough for me.

    Think Yeti.

Are you referring to bladesmith? I made a few knives back several years ago. I used the stock removal method exclusively, I never forged any blades.

My brother and I were at a family gathering back when I was making knives and he brought a couple of knives that he had made and was showing them around. I too had brought a couple of my knives and I couldn't help but bring them out to show him up. He looked at my knives and said those look like factory made knives not like homemade knives. To that I said I don't make homemade knives I make custom knives.

I spent $200 on my knife and used it for the past 5 years. I can't count how many times I only had one hand free when I needed my knife and using it one handed is a breeze. I can take it to work, use it and don't have to worry about a dull knife. To me it's like spending more money on a gun for better reliability. I think after 5 years I got my moneys' worth.

To me most of the things like knives and guns comes down to what you like and what you can afford. Most people don’t need anything more than a $30 kershaw from academy or a savage axis rifle with a Nikon prostaff scope. If you have the money and like a certain product then buy it.

Not what he says in his article:

"Despite the quality of AUS 8 steel, it should not be thought to be a premium grade steel, such as S35VN, ELMAX, and M390 steels. AUS 8 is a high-grade metal that is in the ranks of steels such as 440C and 8Cr13MoV grade steels. Therefore, knives with AUS 8 steel will typically be more in the 30 to 150 dollar range"

Here are 2 of my knives, both are 440C, one was given to me Dec 1966, the other is new as I finally retired my old one after carrying it all these years.
