Just moved here (Austin) from Fairfax, VA. We're retired and wanted to be closer to my daughter who lives near Elgin. VA has been steadily moving left of center (we lived there 20 years) and this past election cycle for state offices saw a resounding defeat of pro-2nd Amendment delegates. All the pro-civil rights achievements (2A civil rights) achieved over those 20 years, like no-waiting periods, elimination of 1 handgun a month law, and shall issue concealed permits are in the Democrats sights for reversal. It won't take but another cycle or two and VA will be just like MD.

I'm a little disappointed that I have to wait 6 months to apply for my concealed carry permit which I had in VA and "lost" after I got my TX drivers license. But so be it. inconvenient but tolerable considering those who live in CA, NY or NJ (where I was born and raised).

Welcome to the forum and to Texas! I hope you are mistaken about Virginia's slide into socialism but as a recent escapee from Maryland, I fear you might be correct. The 2A fight is still going on here. Texas may be a hundred times better than where we left but there is plenty of work to do yet. Hope to see you at some hearings at the Capitol.

Chris, sure hope you know that Austin is not just a little left of center...I have lived in Austin and lived in San Fran, just about 1 in the same, far extreme left.

But it is a fun town with a jillion things to do.

Welcome to Texas, as long as you’re a resident, you should not have any wait, I got mine as soon as I moved hr from Cali, I believe that was an old rule no longer in effect.

Here is an excerpt from the TXDPS FAQ

    11. Do I have to be a resident of Texas to obtain a Texas License to Carry a Handgun (LTC)?
No. Per Texas Government Code §411.173, legal residents of another state or persons who relocate to Texas with the intent to establish residency may obtain an LTC. Those individuals must submit an application, pay the required fees, successfully complete the required training in Texas and submit all supporting documents. They also must submit form LTC-6, two passport style photos and a copy of their out of state driver license or state issued identification card. Note, however, that all LTC applicants must be legal residents of Texas or another state.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I'll check into what dennisz said. Maybe it won't be a long wait. I kind of knew Austin was left of center before I got here, but I'm hoping the rest of Texas will prevail in any civil rights issue for the 2A.

Oh, and I just bought my first firearm in the Great State of Texas! Went smooth as silk.

It will be even better when you get your LTC.

Outside the I-35 corridor, Houston and El Paso, although there are pockets in those areas, are more of what I would call down to earth Texans.
