There have recently been baseless criticisms about Governor Greg Abbott's draft School and Firearm Safety Plan.

I hope that you will take a moment to read why I am confident that Governor Abbott's proposals, if carefully crafted, can make a difference without violating our constitutional rights enumerated in the 2nd, 4th and 5th amendments or our right to due process.
    https://www.tribtalk.org/2018/06/06/abbotts-school-safety-plan-respects-the-2nd-amendment/

His defense of Abbott's plan basically boils down to this.
I know the governor will never allow our individual right to keep and bear arms — given by God and secured by the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution — to ever be infringed. We stand together in promoting responsible gun ownership, as all gun owners should, and that includes keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.

Frankly I'm tired of putting my trust in politicians that are constantly working on new ways to make us all criminals in one way or another.

This is not the first time I've been disappointed in Jerry over the past ten or so years.

For storage law: see document’s page #37 (upper right hand corner) of this:
    https://gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/press/School_Safety_Action_Plan_05302018.pdf

The main change is increasing the current law coverage to include age 17.
The other two items have to do with enforcement proof of safe storage techniques and increasing the penalty level.

These are Abbott’s “proposed” changes. They would not take effect until the legislature votes to approve the changes to the Texas Penal Code 46.13.

On a personal level, since I don’t have younger kids (or grandkids) running about the place, the storage thing is less disturbing to me than his “mandatory” reporting of lost or stolen guns. If we say a gun is just a tool, then why am I necessarily obligated to report its loss if I don’t have to report a shovel that was stolen? While it may be a good thing to report it, I’m really objecting to making it ‘legally’ mandatory. Will there be penalties on me if it’s reported theft or loss exceeds some kind of mandated time frame? Just not a good law!

And then there’s the so called ‘Red Flag’ law. Very troubling in nature; a law that’s just ripe to be abused. Let’s see just how fast those supposed Rights “safe guards” disappear in a real world environment!

Abbot has disappointed me with his gun control measures. I hope the Texas legislature can & will stop these proposals from becoming law.

Storage laws sound like a good thing and I believe most responsible gun owners take great care to secure their firearms from unauthorized access. I don't believe it is best for the state to attempt to mandate this with laws which are essentially unenforceable until after the fact of a tragedy such as an accidental injury or death. I'm afraid some in the legislature are stuck in "do something" mode, even if what they propose to do won't make a lick of difference. Storage laws simply do not work as intended and increasing penalties isn't a solution.

Here’s my problem with storage laws, from the text of the proposed change:

    (3) “Secure” means to take steps that a reasonable person would take to prevent the access to a readily dischargeable firearm by a child, including but not limited to placing a firearm in a locked container or temporarily rendering the firearm inoperable by a trigger lock or other means.

Sounds good, right? In practice, this requirement can gut the castle doctrine by requiring whether you have children or not, to secure firearms while at home or in a hotel and they have to be kept in a condition that is ‘not readily dischargeble’.

To comply with the law, no more bedside guns.

    No thanks to that.

Exactly. As dogbone said, Abbott (& others) got caught up in the *do something* mode.

Now those leading state politicians, rather than stand their ground on 2A matters, have thrown the unnecessary burden onto us and the legislature to stop.

Meh, don’t see those laws getting passed and doubt Abbott thinks so either. As was said, he was caught up in the “doing something” fever. Reckon this gets him off the hook.

On a separate question for my own edification please...I’m always reading or hearing people say that keeping and bearing arms is our “God-given right”. I grew up going to Sunday school and church, but don’t remember the part in the Bible about guns, can someone please point me to that book, chapter, or verse? Thanks!

There’s no mention of David slaying Goliath with an illegal assault slingshot, so chalk that one up to the right to own a weapon.

    Thanks!

You won't find any specific mention of firearms in the Bible, just as there is no mention of cell phones or the internet. There are many references to battling evil, both in spiritual terms and in dealing with physical aggression. There is an excellent discussion of the right of self defense from a Biblical perspective in the linked article by David French. It is difficult to imagine effective self defense without access to the proper tools.

...keeping and bearing arms is our “God-given right”.

First of all, since there were no “guns” at the time the inspired word of God was recorded by human hand, you have to accept “arms” meant other tools. Perhaps the most common ‘arms’ mentioned in The Bible, would be the ‘sword’.

If you do a ‘key word’ search on a Bible search website, you will find the word “sword” (analogous to the word, “arms” or “gun”), mentioned multiple times, in both an offensive and a defensive context.

To more directly answer your question, the most common reference I see given is, The Son of Man, directing his disciples in Luke 22:36. (As with virtually any phrase in The Bible, this one too, has been open to both literal as well as metaphor or allegorical interpretations).

In the broader sense as considered by Voltaire in the natural Rights of Man, there exist the innate Right to self preservation (i.e., self-defense).

Additionally, this was not difficult to Google:

I thought about that too, and decided if that’s the case, then that’s just pure .
(Chick-n-chit on his part for not standing firm on 2A Rights).

    On a separate question ...
Probably should be it’s own separate thread.

I’m always reading or hearing people say that keeping and bearing arms is our “God-given right”.
One would be me; I ALWAYS say or preface my comment(s) about the Second Amendment being a GOD-given Right. Because, after all, what better way to reflect the insanity of the liberal Left’s position back to them, than having them argue with God that He never said that!

(See... I can be just like my preacher). Once he invokes “God’s position” into the argument, I have to STFU - because I’ve just lost the debate. How can ya argue with God?

Well I suppose you can; ex-Archangel Luicfer did.... but you see where that got him!

I grew up going to Sunday school and church...
As the little ‘Church Lady’ used to say on Saturday Night Live, “Well, isn’t THAT special?”
