Does anyone on this forum home school their kids or has family members that home school?

I was home schooled growing up. The wife and I are going to home school our kids and I'm just wanting to know who's who in the home school curriculum now days. I grew up using Christian Liberty Academy and we might just stick with them.

Any info would be much appreciated.

we think about it every time there's a damn school shooting. Then I get pissed that we live in a suburban area. If we were home school we should have gone rural.

Either way, it's a very viable option these days.

Yeah man... I know not everyone has the option and I understand that. Life is about doing what ya can, when ya can. But we're not ready to give our babies to the B.S. system it has become. Momma is a stay at home wife and the closest school is 40mins away. I actually saw the bus driver the other day texting on her phone when I passed her. I thought... Hell no my kids ain't riding with her.

We just pulled our kids out of the Charter School (ILTexas) because of the extreme disorganization. The local traditional school seems awesome. We brought our kids there for orientation, the nurse kissed our Kinder kid and slapped his ass. Nice to see they aren't afraid of KC even in a big city like Fort Worth.

If it gets to the point where things start going backwards, we'll re-evaluate. But so far all our local schools still seem good. Not sure how long Tarrant will keep the blue BS away.

Home schooling is great if done right! We had a bunch of home school kids in our district when I was an administrator. Everyone I ever met was very respectful and smart! There is always the rumor about how home school kids don't get as good an education, but that is bullshit, in my opinion. Upper administration doesn't like it because they don't get tax money from home school families.

Neither of my children have attended a government school except for sporting events and other activities like plays and musicals.

Almost all of their friends are in public school though and they get along with everyone.
    .

My wife has used different curriculum for each kid, because they learn differently.

My son is a 2nd year Electrical Engineering student and doing great. He excelled in science and history.
He is a self starter and has great reading comprehension so he used a different system (I'll find out for sure and PM you) that he could work ahead and test out and he did. His JR and SR years he spent over half his time taking college courses.

Although we had to pay a lot more for these courses, being homeschooled than the same courses the public school kids had to pay, if anything.

My daughter, who is more talented in art and is less disciplined so she needed more structure. My wife uses an internet based system called Monarch.

You might look for a local home school association and see what they have to offer.

We home schooled ours and they came out fine. I much prefer the Christian attitude. The wife and I stayed involved for years afterward , and we have watched Home Schoolers become more and more secular with formerly openly Christian groups now openly claiming not to be Christian organizations. They worship that dollar and nothing else. Keep them at home and stay on a good learning path. Many of the secular groups and stores need to be avoided as they are public school minded and just want your money. This was our last year to be involved. If you don't teach morals at home they will not get them. We don't need anymore snowflakes

Yes, we homeschool and as a matter of fact I just finished math class. Our daughter went to Kinder in public school, but we chose to homeschool her starting in first. We are a year into it and have found that it works well for us.

If you haven't already, skip on over to Texas Homeschool Coalition. https://www.thsc.org/

They will show you all you need to know to get started, both legally and otherwise. They should also help you link up with a homeschool group in your area that will be a valuable source of information and be there for you for whatever you may need.

I will tell you what currently works for us, but keep in mind every kid and teacher are different and you may have to try a few different models and curriculums before you find what works for you. Just don't freak out like I did. I had to learn how to relax and get the public school mindset out of my head. You teach according to your child and not according to some state mandated metric. And to me that is one of the greatest things about home schooling. Taking your time and KNOWING your child knows what is being taught. No knock on public schools, many kids do great in that sort of environment, but some do not.

We are currently using Alpha Omega Horizons for math.
For reading we are on our 2nd kit of All About Reading. At this age there isn't much else. There is a good citizenship requirement, but at this age knowing and reciting both the Pledge of Alligience and Texas Pledge cover that. Plus when you homeschool, your entire day together is a learning experience if you want it to be. I believe some times those lessons are the ones that make the greatest impression.

I could go on and on, so I'll stop here but I'm sure Ill pop back in here with more as I read other responses.

Eta - if I repeated some things already said its because it took me a while to reply and hadn't gotten to read some of the posts since.

ITs been a long time, but my oldest was home schooled after being sexually assualted in public school. We did it two years, then back to public school, as my wife struggled to make it happen. We were all concerned about whether she kept up, but when they tested her she tested two grades above the grade she was going into.

We home schooled my daughter from 6-12th grade and she graduated “high school” with an associates degree and straight A’s. During the beginning of home schooling we started her with piano lessons and had her continue with lessons through college. Eventually she was unable to find an advanced teacher but she still plays today. She has her masters and is now a professor at a local junior college and had one B throughout college and zero college loans when she finished.

If I had to do it over again I would have enrolled her at the local community college in 9th grade so she would have graduated with a bachelors degree. Why waste four years of high school if you can knock out college in the same time? If you dedicate the time you can provide a much better and well rounded education and teach your child the way you want. I’ve also seen it done wrong by lazy parents and seen kids who would have been better off in public school. Look for homeschool groups in your area. Each kid is different but the time investment is worth it in the long run.

It's great to see so many homeschoolers here on the site! We homeschool our three girls; a 10 year old and 2 year old twins. Mostly a mix of Montessori and un-schooling.

Happy to answer any questions you have, or trade tips with other homeschoolers here.

You quoted Charlie saying that “Home Schooling is great if done right”
    Question:
Would you also not say with the same veracity that “Public Schooling is great if done right”??

Are there not many examples of each done right and done wrong?

If "public" schooling was done correctly, yes. But tell me when you saw something done by a "public institution" that was done as well as an individual could, especially with the individual's own children. Theoretically, it "could" happen, but .....................

There are many examples of each, most of what I witnessed as a public school employee indicated the home school did a better and faster job than the "institution". And I would also say that I attribute that to teaching an "individual" rather than a group.

I think I did a poor job of making my point.
Roadrunner agreed with you that homeschooling is great if done right, which led me to think he was making a point about homeschooling rarely being done right. So my point was to put both into the equation and to make basically the same point you did about government /public schools.

My kids haven’t been offered illegal drugs in home school, have not been indoctrinated in some enviro/religion or taught false historic narratives about this country or the world, or abused in any way, but I see this every week in this town.
I lost count of how many teachers have been busted having sexual relationships with school kids right here in our school district.

My kids are well rounded, thinking, aware, young adults.
    Hell yes I am biased.
I’ve seen the results of government education and I’m not impressed
