IMHO, the Cooper's in Llano is the Cooper's that is worth standing in line for. Non-family Cooper's franchises such as the one in Junction and the one that was in Round Rock were more than just disappointing.

For BBQ Tejas opens at 11 AM till they sell out, usually by 3 PM or so. Seems to be the thing with great BBQ joints these days, get there early and wait in line. Not for this guy. I've had good luck showing up around 1 PM on weekdays, short line and they usually aren't sold out of anything yet. All bets are off for Saturdays, especially if the weather is nice.

They close when they sell out, and they usually sell out. If they don't sell out, they donate what's left to first responders or charities, or send it home with employees. They fed a lot of first responders and aid workers after Harvey.
I've heard from others that they get food after 1PM (and lines were short), but I'm almost always there before 11. Before the Texas Monthly article, we never had to wait long. :(

Their pastrami beef is great too; Thursdays only.

    Helotes!
Happened to be on Gonzales this afternoon looking for a place to have a late lunch/early dinner. Just happened to come across Baker Boys BBQ (1404 Sarah DeWitt Dr, Gonzales, TX 78629) and decided to give it a try despite not looking like much from the outside. As we were entering we realized they would be closing in ten minutes but kudos to the staff for ensuring it that wouldn't be a problem. We were able to order our food and enjoy it without being rushed. We really appreciated that!

But that was only the start, my son and I ordered the one-meat brisket plates with two sides. I got the potato salad and pinto beans, my son got cheesy potatoes and pinto beans as well. My wife got the chopped beef sandwich (sorry, "sammich!") as well as the potato salad. My youngest got a bag of Fritos and a Propel drink. I got a Gatorade, my wife a bottled water and my son ice tea. Total was $41.

Now to the thick of things...this has to be some of the best BBQ I've ever had! The brisket was so flavorful that I passed on putting any sauce on it, something I rarely do. It was moist and tender, and I could cut it with my fork. I was extremely impressed!

My wife had favorable things to say about her chopped sandwich (oops, "sammich") and we all loved the potato salad and pinto beans. My son thought the cheesy potatoes were good, but at that point he was so full that he didn't eat much of them.

So excellent BBQ, friendly staff and reasonable prices. About the only downside I can think of is that this place is 95 miles (about an hour and a half drive) away from where we live. That may be a good thing, as otherwise I would eat here several times a week; but I guarantee you that it's well worth trying if you are anywhere in the area. In fact, we will be back, it's just that good!

Just looking at the slices of the Brisket, it looks like a great cook on it, meat show a nice smoke ring, is NOT over cooked, nor is it last weeks Q they have not sold yet...

I will stop there next time I pass thru...

We found Baker Boys last year on our way to San Antonio. Definitely one of the best BBQ stops we have made. If your in the area make sure you try it.

Micklethwait Craft Meats in Austin is another great place to try. They run out of a trailer with the pit outside beside them in another structure. Seating is picnic table under shade cloth...but their BBQ is on point. I think they are #8 on the Texas monthly top 50 list.

While we are on the subject of great Q let us not forget the sides. Traditional sides are pinto beans, potato salad, onions and white bread. You may find others but old school is just what I said, I don't others.

Onions: Wow I love onions and I love them sweet, buying them sweet is easy as there are many sweets to chose from, but the hot eye crying onions are not acceptable. Yes they are cheap and sweets a few pennies more. Hot onions are a sign of a bad joint, if you will skimp a few pennies on onions in cost then what else are you skimping on???

Pinto Beans: Best when made from dried beans, but ok it a busy place so you buy the ready mades in the #10 can. Every thought about dumping a little of your spices and sauce into the pot? Try it, I love my GOOD pinto beans!!!

Sauce: Word to the wise, the FRIST ingredient in the Sauce is NOT SUGAR or corn syrup. I don't want to go into diabetic shock putting your sauce on you dried out meat.

Potato Salad: Growing up in San Antonio (South Side!) I have been eating Q and Mexican food longer than you have been alive in most cases and certainly longer than you been doing BBQ. Traditional in Potato Salad is MUSTARD and there is a reason for that. Mayo is made with raw eggs and it will go bad in a heartbeat when exposed to heat of the summer or not stored in the cold. So what everyone used to make their potato salad was Kraft Miracle Whip mixed with Frenchs Mustard, anything other than that is just not Texas Potato salad, but I have noticed after the years I see less and less of that and in fact I suspect that most of it like the rest of you sides are just bought down at Sam's club in bulk. In fact its getting rare I even order sides, I just get meat by the lb and let it go at that.

Eaten it and yes its some good stuff.

As for being on the Tex Mtly, not so sure that is a feather in your cap. Over the years and for a FACT the worst Q I have ever had and I mean a few bites and its given to the dogs, have come from Tex Mtly top 50. Yes some of them are worthy but unlike women, ever since the first I had the worst I have ever had was not good to eat.

+2 on the mustard potato salad. We had mustard potato salad on the west side as well. I have gotten to the point where I just order meat to go by the pound as well. Most sides are overpriced, and that's not what I look for in a BBQ joint anyway.

    B&B Smokehouse

2627 Pleasanton Rd, San Antonio, TX 78221

Before our range day, we decided to grab lunch at B&B Smokehouse. None of us had been there before, so this was truly a first-time experience.

We go there at 11:00 and beat the after-church rush.

At least three of us (Moonpie, easy rider, me) got brisket or brisket and sausage. My sides were pintos and potato salad; add a drink and it was about $15 for the 2-meat combo.

Pics or gtfo, so here it is:

    0dad71ced1859e93481927d25463a704.jpg

Beef. Good smoke ring, think bark. They offer lean, moist, or ‘deckled’ which is what they call the point. I took a chance and said give me your best cut. Sauce is served on the side, as it should be. To add to the good smoke ring was a good smoke flavor that wasn’t overpowering. Brisket was fine to damn good for the price point. Sauce was a little spice and covered the beef taste, so I don’t recommend dipping.

Sausage. Damn good sausage. They only offer one version of sausage. As you can tell, a serving is pretty healthy. Sausage didn’t need sauce, either. Crisp casing, firm texture, nice flavor.

Sides. Homemade. The pintos run a little peppery, but won’t set you on fire. The potato salad was very good, too. Nothing bad to say here at all.

Overall, a good example of what a bbq joint should be.

    B-Daddy’s Review.

2-Meat plate: Brisket, sausage, pintos, mac & cheese since potato salad on hot day is a bad idea.

    8e66c5b39007891dbfc16e9360f20822.jpg

B-Daddy’s is a storefront in Helotes that caters and has a food truck. This review isn’t about that B-Daddy’s, it’s about their food truck. Well, it’s kind of a food truck, as it seems they just use the truck to hold the meats and sides at temp, kind of like a catered buffet on wheels.

Ordered the standard 2-meat plate with sides and tea and forked over $14 and change. Y’all see what I got in return.

Brisket. Bark is decent, but not $20/lb decent which is what they charge in store. Slices are thick, which I prefer. Tasted like smoked beef out to taste like and the texture was good considering how long they had to keep it warm. And therein lies one of two problems. First, the seasoning was too salty for my taste and that says a lot. Then, to combat drying out in the warmer I’m going to guess they inject the beef with beef broth, which serves to enhance the salty beef flavor. I mean if salty smoked beef is your thing, then here’s your place. They’ll let you pump your own commercial Head Country BBQ sauce, but really? At these prices they should be making their own.

Sausage. Different take on sausage in that their sausage is closer to garlicky pork polish link than what I’d expect at BBQ joint. Good size serving though and not as salty as the brisket.

Sides. Made in house and tasty; not spectacular, but well above average.

Overall, I’d go back if I was looking for above average ‘cue for above average $. If the choice was Smoky Mo’s or B-Daddy’s, just go to B-Daddy’s as you’ll spend the same amount for a plate at either place.

But B-Daddy’s is not $20/lb quality so I’d probably just order a sliced beef sandwich and be happy about it.

Have eaten there several times already, it's not far from the house. It is unique fare but it's also kinda pricey. I am not a fan of their sides, and honestly I think there are better options out there but overall it's pretty good BBQ.

Just to note, we happened to be back in Gonzales last Saturday and made a return trip to Baker Boys. It was still excellent!

I decided to try Black Board BBQ in Sisterdale today. I had the brisket sandwich and Joe’s Asian Slaw, both were good. The brisket had a good flavor and thy gave you plenty, advertised as 4 oz, but it sure felt heavier. The price for the sammi was $7.00, good value for what you get. The slaw was a vinegar based slaw, and it was also good. I will go back and take the wife next time.

Consistency is the hallmark of a good bbq joint. I’ll have to try ‘er our next time I’m out that way. Once it cools off, maybe I’ll see about a ride to eat mission.

Personally, I would avoid IH-10 eastbound and enjoy 78 by Randolph all the way to Seguin, then Alt 90 or even farther south 477 to 466. It takes more time but it's also more relaxing and scenic. I was amazed at how different the area was compared to San Antonio, being that it's not that far from here.

But if you do decide to take the interstate, note that there is absolutely no place to get gas between Seguin and Gonzales! That's about 24 miles and unfortunately I only remembered I needed to refuel (badly) when I saw the exit to Kingsbury. Luckily Geno's Automotive there had five gallon cans for $15, I tipped the guy an extra five just because I was relieved we wouldn't be stuck on the side of the road! :p

After driving through Lexington for the last 7 1/2 years, I finally managed to stop at Snow's for a brisket sandwich (about 12:30... last piece of brisket there). Convinced me to take my wife there the following Saturday around 10:30. Fair sized line, but only took about 20 minutes to get in.
I sure don't qualify as an expert, but the brisket, ribs, sausage and beans were unbelievable.
Considering how they're about a half hour drive from home, I don't see needing to look elsewhere.
