this thread has reminded me why I don't associate much here - seems this forum is populated by cowardly paranoid folks that never own'd a man card in the first place, never go outta their way to lend a helping hand to those in possible need for fear of the un-known and those it appears who only see the worst in folks based on appearances............

Some of the most rewarding experiences in my life have come from "stopping to lend a hand" or helping strangers in need, whether it be on the side of the road, on a downtown street or at 4:30 am in the morning - but then I have never been afraid to place my life and trust in god in question either, unlike those unwilling to get involved, but so willing to poke fun or speculate nefarious scenarios after the fact, without a clue as to the actual circumstances.

While very true, it's a different world today in 2018, but IMHO folks exhibiting the above mentioned conditions ain't making things any better and standing up to the "wrongs" now days takes character and courage, something sorely lacking in current society.

As you do not tell us where you live its hard to understand your frame of reference.

Having someone knock on your door in the city, in a dense neighborhood after dark and at 3:15 am, its not cause they are selling Girl Scout cookies or asking for donations to the March of Dimes. At best its a red flag. It someone you don't know, and do not recognize as a neighbor, there is not a car in front of your house with a flat tire or the hood up. Only a fool would swing open the door and say 'come on down' like Bob Barker on the Price is Right...what's next tell them they can spin the cash wheel or pick door?

Getting robbed in the city is far from a rarity and in todays world where a Trump yard sign or bumper sticker at best can lead to damage and at worst can be bullet holes. Did you drive thru LA after the riots? I did, looked worse than war zones this soldier has been in. Black Lives Matter had sone $millions in damage across the US, ANTIFA, its only a question of time before the shooting starts.

The words of Ronald Reagan apply..."trust but verify", if you cannot verify, get involved at your own peril...

Its a very different thing from pulling over to help someone at a weird hour, and having some lady ringing your door bell at 4am. Its very well documented that its a new scheme to get someone to open up, then their buddies in hiding come out to greet you with weapons.

I've had a few fights against more than one person, and held my own. But I'm getting a little old to be trying that out, especially at 4am, especially if they have guns.

Out where I live in the country, very few people have reason to be there. Everyone on the road knows everyone else. I Have helped stranded people on the side of the road and will continue to do so. Or people lost on my road. Regardless of time of day or night, because we know they have little reason to be there, most people that show up there are met with a smile. And a gun. At least one gun. Several neighbors might well be on their porch with one as well as me.
    Especially at night.

There are parts of the country where it's traditional to leave your house unlocked when you move into town for the winter. After all, if anyone is at your door in the middle of winter, they've got an emergency and their lives probably depend on getting into your house.

OTOH, I've lived where I could hear beatings and attempted murders through the sheetrock, women were gang-raped in the laundry, several apartments were active brothels, the drug dealers operated openly, the elevators were used as public toilets, and preteen girls walked the streets offering cut-rate sex services.

In one of those locations, I wouldn't hesitate to open the door to someone knocking in the middle of the night. In the other, I'd happily yell that I was calling the police while keeping a substantial distance between myself and the door.

    Context is everything.
