Went to Yellowstone last week... Got to see a lot of the 2nd most numerous mammal on the planet.

The experience was kinda like I35 mixed with an Asian shopping mall, and more trees.

Yep, summer is not a good time to be in Yellowstone as you found out. Grand Prismatic and Old Faithful would have been super crowded.

I have hiked in Yellowstone & Grand Teton NPs multiple times and IMO the best times to go are late Spring, before school lets out, and early Fall after school starts back up.

I had planed to do some hiking, but I found out last minute that they don't allow you to bring your dog into the undeveloped parts of the park. Pretty disappointing...

We didn't even attempt to get close to the main geothermal stuff; it was very crowded. I had to take a piss so we pulled into the Old Faithful General Store and it was just disgusting how packed it was.

Couldn't wait to get out of the park and back into nature.

Your dog would have been predator bait, which is why they are not allowed there, but it is common to see hikers with dogs in many of the parks.

My advice would be to hike instead in the least traveled NP's. And keep in mind that the National Park system includes NPs as well as all of the National Monuments and National Recreation areas. Grand Staircase NM in Utah is one of my favorite places to hike and you rarely see other people on the trails, or if you do it is very few.

From this list - https://www.reserveamerica.com/outd...tional-parks-and-why-you-have-to-see-them.htm - I have hiked in:
Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska
    North Cascades National Park, Washington
    Great Basin National Park, Nevada
    Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado

    and can vouch for them.

When I hiked the high country (10,000+ feet) in Great Basin I rarely saw anyone else. And if I did, it was just 1 or 2 other people.

When I hiked in Lake Clark, it was just me and my bush pilot guide, and a whole bunch of grizzlies. Saw no other humans at all!

Yellowstone is a drive thru park for most visitors as most are too fat and lazy to get out of their cars unless it is too eat more.

Better the dog than me

I think it's crazy to hike without a dog. She's been all over NM, CO and UT with me. She knows when there's bears or cats in an area way before I do, and alerts me to it.

Thanks for the links; I'll definitely check them out.

We did this when we went to Alaska. Dude flew us out in the middle of nowhere and dropped us off for three days. It was the best camping experience I've ever had.

I wish more people would talk about that. Yellowstone is bullshit.

So, British visitors rent Dodge vans?
The majority of the foreign tourists were Asian. At least half, if not more, of the people in the park weren't American.

I guess I was lucky a few years back, the traffic wasn't near that bad. You do have to hike a bit to see many of the thermals. Here's a few thermals I took pics of.

I visited Yellowstone many times as a youngster. My grandparents lived in St. Anthony which is pretty close to the park.

There's no way I'd go back in the summer now. Too many people. Late September to mid October would be my choice now.

That is from the TV show.....

I was laughing loudly at the TV when that episode started that way because I had seen the same damn thing a few days earlier. There were a couple bears wandering around and a bus load of Asians were on the side of the road taking pictures of it. Their bus mostly blocking the lane. As we squeezed passed them I saw a park ranger pulling in behind them. I hope they got a talking to.
