looking for a place to take the family camping on a river/lake and do some fishing next spring. Never really been camping much before but looking for somewhere with not many people around we would be able to hike around and fish and hang out around the campfire...
any ideas on good places or suggestions from any of y’all expert campers out there?

Lake Meridian State Park is one of our faves. In early spring they stick the lake with trout. I think no fishing license required.

Ultra light tackle and a can of whole kernel corn, and you are set.

Nice campground, lots of wildlife and good hiking trails.

Eagle Mountain Lake has quite a few camping areas and supposed to have some good hiking trails and decent to good fishin'. Been well over a decade since I was last there though.

Big Bend National Park is very secluded, lots to do, camping, fishing, hiking, canoeing. Took my grand kids the a few years ago had a great time, wasn’t crowded like the popular places, Lost Maples is one, beautiful rivers but over crowded.

You forgot to mention the all important salmon egg hook to "stick" those trout.

Most state parks in Texas are good family spots to camp. Find one with a lake or river & you should be good to go.

We did Meridian last Spring Break with the kids. Its nice little park & the lake has some good bass. I took my kayak & fished the lake throwing a frog down the shore lines & the bass on beds were just tearing it up.

Like the ole cowboy said, Lake Whitney is a nice place to go. It is a Corp of Engineers lake and they, the COE, have some really nice camping areas. We camped there a few days last summer and the deer came up in the camp every day to eat the corn that we put out for them. I think there is a state park there also but the COE parks are less expensive.

We always camped the state park at Whitney. Very nice facilities, and they dont allow public consumption of alcohol, which eliminates the big party groups. Its a great place to take kids.
