I miss those Aquilla Super Colibris. The demise of many a tasty whitewing in my back yard over the years. I was feeding birds, but those whitewings would just decimate my feeders if I didn't thin them out.

I left the mourning doves alone. Even had a little band of Incas take up residence.

This is going to sound weird, but I swear it works. I would put the doves whole in a Ziploc in the fridge for 2-3 days before I cleaned them. Made them more tender and tasty. I decided that if they could hang whole grouse in 80° for 3 days before eating them in Scotland, I could do 3 days refrigerated.

Haven't tried those CCI Quiets yet, ( still have a few Aguilla left,) but I know I won't like them as well as the SCs. For one thing, the CCI are heavier bullets. I felt bad enough when I missed with a SC, (even though my shots SHOULD have dropped in undeveloped land, I am in a neighborhood), and I feel better with a pellet gun sized bullet dropping from the sky.

Fortunately, the ol' scoped Marlin didn't miss often.

Been ignoring my old Mark I lately. Haven't shot it in a couple of years.

I happened to take my Victory with me to SGA yesterday. A man came in to the range with his young boy and a little. 22 single shot childrens rifle. Just bought it and first time for his son to shoot. I offered him the Victory so his son could shoot a pistol as well.
I asked how old his son was, and he said six.

I got my pistol back and was thinking that he sure looked little, and that I had killed my first deer when I was eight.

You seem to have a problem with breaking the law and then bragging about it.

I think we have rules against that.

Need to get the old Marlin Model 81 out. I don't have a more accurate gun. My dad gave me that rifle as my first gun when I was 13. Back in the day I could literally shoot the eye out of a coon. I got $5 extra for no bullet holes.

Too bad they changed the laws about selling furs. It blocked many a country kid from making gas money in the winter.

Was this a "Texas" law change?

Yes. They changed it to where you had to have a fur license ($300 back then) to even kill critters for furs.

Prior to that, you could kill and sell to a fur buyer. $25 - $35 for a coon, $1 for a possum. $40 for a skunk, but I never sold one. Killed lots of them, didn't touch them.

I worked for a guy that managed small ranches. We had about 8 spots that totaled 3500 acres. I had access to them except for one. It was a country kid paradise. All of those spots had water and coons galore.

    I'd like to hear more.

I remember when I was in high school and one day per week, every boy who sold furs had an excused absence for first period because the fur buyer set up in the parking lot of the local Dairy Queen one day a week.

    Gunz are icky.
I used to trap back in the 1970’s.
The law then was you were supposed to have a license to sell fur. Not to take it but to legally sell it.
Most fur buyers never asked to see it.
I did obtain the license finally. Just about the time the price of furs dropped theu the floor and I quit.
It was fun but it could turn into real work if you ran a long line of traps. Trying to do a regular job and run a trap line was too much.

I didn't run traps. I went spotlighting on private property (totally legal) for my quarry. It was much more pleasant than trapping. Had a couple buddies that did that. But I made more cash doing the spotlighting thing, and often had a date run the light for me. There are some sweet makeout spots out in the boonies with nothing but the pale moonlight.

Also, I was the first kid at my school to put a deer rifle scope on a 22. A few decades later, I still love that 81.

Ah, I thought you meant it was not allowed.

It was allowed if you bought a $300 license. I didn't make much more than that.

So that was the end of my furby killing career. Had to get a chump job to get by.

It's a Ruger 10/22 with a Volquartsen Tension barrel and the stock started out as a stock blank. Not sure which brand. My dad decided awhile back to build all the boys in the family a 22. He bought several different stock blanks and finished fitting them, sanding, and putting an oil finish on them. I got first pick of the rifles and that is the one I picked. More fun than I should be allowed to have!
