Probably the presence of the bayonet lug on the carbine.
I've read that M1 carbines with factory bayonet lugs were in the Pacific theatre, but not the ETO.
All refurbished carbines had bayonet lugs installed.

QF-4. Full scale aerial target. Can be flown manned or unmanned.
USAF retired that platform in the second half of my career. Replaced with the QF-16.

This particular F-4 is owned and operated by the Collins Foundation. At the time these pictures were taken, October 2012, it was the only F-4 in private hands. Many F-4's suffered the fate you described but not this one.

Too bad that the artist used a post WW II Carbine. Otherwise, a great sculpture.

The picture is of the Marine Corps War Memorial near Arlington National Cemetery, taken in March of 2005. The sculpture is based upon the iconic photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945. The picture depicts six United States Marines raising a U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi, during the Battle of Iwo Jima, in World War II. After examining the original photo, it is impossible to determine what type of carbine (or even if it is a carbine vs a M1) this particular soldier (I believe his name was Michael Strank) was carrying. The sculptor may have had more detailed information but in this case I’m willing to cut him a little slack.

I agree with all of that except "...determining what type of carbine..." Notice that the weapon in question has a bayonet lug on it. This feature is post war when the sights and safety were changed and the bayonet lug was added. I may be wrong, but I have watched a lot of film from this time period and have never seen that feature until after the war ended.
