After anybody mounts your wheel(s) loosen it and torque it right. Takes just moments.
Sage advice here. I check and re-torque every time someone touches the car, even if they don't explicitly "have" to remove the wheels. I've caught loose lugs a few times where I didn't think they pulled the wheels, but they apparently did. The last time I had the oil changed in my Camaro was at the dealer, part of the new car get 2 free deal. I checked the lugs the next day, and glad I did. Found a few around 40lb.ft. and some at 60'ish, none anywhere near spec (140lb. ft.). When I looked over the paperwork, part of their oil change service is a brake inspection.

The roadside guy had a 3-foot socket wrench - and still it took a LOT of effort on his part to get those lug nuts to budge. I'm amazed none of the posts snapped.

And yeah, the spare had 15lbs of air in it - but he had a compressor so that was taken care of.

Still pissed I'm out $85 on something I should've been able to do myself.

I keep one of those in my truck, it's a long Snap-On breaker bar. The Snap-On was given to me, but a cheap Harbor Freight one would work just as good for the occasional lug nut.

I'm sorry you had been treated badly by Discount Tire.
I used Discount Tire in San Antonio (1604). They torqued the lug nuts correctly.

Here’s what they don’t tell you: using insurance-provided roadside assistance can turn into something that counts against your insurance record.

Ask me how I know...despite having otherwise excellent USAA insurance, I have AAA now as well.

I did not know that. I had USAA in CA and loved them. Their homeowner's insurance is screwed up in the Houston area so I can't use them here. It's a shame.

Peripherally related. What would you all recommend for a torque wrench? Being able to check torque on my nuts would be nice. Plus I can use it for a proper AR build.

    Craftsman, Husky, etc.

I trust most of them besides the cheap Harbor Freight version.

I thought they used those Torque sticks on the wheels . They do at the discount tire I usually go to.
The use them at my Discount Tire too then hit them with the torque wrench.

Suspiciously it clicks without turning the nut.

I don't trust the torque sticks but have never had a lug nut so tight I couldn't remove it either.

I have one you could borrow. I do not think you live far from me.
