I spent many hours in Maryland working to defend and preserve our rights mentioned in the Second Amendment. I learned there the importance of individual citizens taking part in the legislative process, both to help shepherd good bills through to passage and to effectively block bills which threaten our rights. It took a bit of effort and working with more experienced folks to find a path through the maze of a bill's journey into law.

I was expecting to find the same learning curve here in my new Texas home. I was very happily surprised to learn that Rachel Malone, the new Texas director for Gun Owners of America, is planning a series of legislative training sessions throughout the state. These two to three hour sessions will cover:

    - the legislative process
    - how to track bills and topics
    - how to read and understand bills
    - chokepoints and pressure points
    - interacting with legislators
    - navigating committee hearings
    - preparing testimony
    - delivering testimony

What do you care about? Guns / Constitutional Carry? Maybe other things also? Come to this training and Rachel will show you how to make it happen.

I saw something like this floating around FB. Although I don't recall any actual dates/locations when I saw it. Thanks for passing this along.

DB, thank you for your efforts!

You're quite welcome. I hope you will be able to attend one of these great sessions in your area. Getting down to the Capitol and testifying before a committee can be a daunting and confusing task but it is vital if we are to preserve and extend our firearms rights. These workshops lay it all out so even a dolt like me can do it.

    Here
You probably won't have much luck getting people here to help. Almost no one here seems to be interested in this sort of thing. The standard answer here is that most pro-gun people have jobs and families and just can't take the time to help.

You are, unfortunately, quite right. Will Rogers once said, "Some learn by reading, some learn by observation. The rest of us have to pee on the electric fence." Reading posts here may be enough for some, a few may learn by watching what is happening in other states. I hope what drove me from the couch to the committee hearing rooms never happens here in Texas.

It's a numbers game, pure and simple. So far this thread has been viewed over 150 times. If what folks read here gets a few of them to go to the training and one or two follow through and come down to Austin... well, that's one or two more voices for freedom.

I just got back from the training. It gets my highest endorsement. Lots of good information from someone who knows what they're talking about.

Glad to hear you found it worthwhile. Rachel has made a few videos on how to testify but I'm sure hearing her explain the process in person was much better. I'm looking forward to attending one in my neck of the woods.
