Voltage regulation. Incoming high voltage goes through a serial tap winding. A motor moves the pickup along that winding, allowing the voltage induced in the secondary winding to be regulated as needed.

So is it possible to hit the pole hard enough to knock everything off without breaking the pole? I suppose the pole could be broken and the car is blocking it.

I would just assume the equipment is fastened well enough to not just fall off there if hit by a car.

How well is this equipment fastened up there?

It’s not. It just sits up there on the rack.

May differ depending on who owns the equipment, but nothing I work around is ever attached, just held down by gravity.

Well that's scary as hell - there's a transformer rack like that on a back road I used to take between McKinney and Wylie that had four of 'em just like that...all leaning toward the road at an alarming angle. I always assumed they were bolted down so they wouldn't fall, because it looked like a bird landing on one would've brought the whole rack down.

In that case my advice would be, try not to hit it with your car.... just sayin.

That's solid advice for just about everything...

Seriously though, these are out by Lake Lavon and they look like they could topple any time. Luckily they're well back from the road - it would take real effort for someone to hit them, but I've seen the results of serious vehicular effort a few times in my life so it wouldn't surprise me.
