Deaf or not, some make really strong bonds with their owners. I'll never forget Gracie escaping her cage at 3 am, and crawling on my face. I almost swatted the crap out of her, until I woke up a little, and thought....maybe this is a rat, and not a bug.
Hey! I had a pet rat as a kid. I'd take one over a cat every day of the week, as long as it's invited into the house.
