I live near Decatur and used to drive to Fort Worth everyday to work at the local Jaguar dealer.

That area has become so congested I don't even recognize it as a way to get into the city.

Glad I retired and don't need the city anymore.

Yeah, not far from where I live. I couldn't tell you the exit # of the streets I take. If I'm traveling in unfamiliar territory, I pay close attention to those #'s....( don't want to miss that Stuckeys!)

Now that we are mostly settled in to the new home I've been looking for a rifle range. Things are a bit different here from what I'm used to. Most ranges are like private clubs, some even have mandatory classes and events that must be completed/attended before you can join. Definitely more costly than other places I've lived.

Still on range quest in the Azle area.

Compared to PA, which has free ranges and many game lands, I have had a challenge finding a place to shoot. I HATE crowds and the ranges I have been to here were crowded even on a week day morning. I will be surprised if you find something in Azle unless you befriend a landowner. There are some options in Weatherford and Parker County Sportsmen is one I think you were talking about. I didn't know the shooting and hunting situation or we definitely would have bought a different house than we did as we only have 2 acres. I love it here, so I don't mean to sound like I am complaining. I was just surprised. It has been just under 2 years here but I usually look a couple of times a week at realtor sites for places with more land we can afford lol.

Texas and the DFW area are really booming right now. So the price of land is just going to go up, gun ranges will get more and more crowded, and the few private, members-only ranges will get more and more expensive with longer and longer wait lists. Just the way it is right now.

Yep I know. Back in 2016 when our realtor kept bragging how fast this area is growing I was too obsessed with the details of moving and with my new job to realize that meant crowds LOL. But in all seriousness it is my fault for not researching the shooting and hunting situation before hand. I thought in a huge gun friendly state it would be a non-issue. That is all on me and why I say I am not complaining. I accept it is on me for being under prepared.

I made the same assumption. Compared to TX, NY gun laws are insanely strict. I thought coming to a gun friendly state finding a range would not be difficult.

The flip side of the coin is PROPERTY RIGHTS. How many times have you read about some property owner told he can't build a structure or dig a pond because of some state or federal ordinance? (endangered species?) Shoot on your own property????? You can't do that because!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It CUTS both ways and if you own property outside of some 'controlling' district, you have FREEDOM!!!

Some states have property owned by the federal gov't. WTF???
The ONLY property that the FED should OWN is Washington D.C.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the FED wants to build some airforce base, bombing range or wilderness area, it should LEASE the land from the State!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (100 year lease or something)

I think the FED should be subordinate to States Rights. Article V.

Funny, this reminded me of something.

Fishing on Lake Worth , a guy comes down trying to keep me from fishing "his" dock.

Now, first , I'm fishing the water around his dock, in my boat, in public water.

Second, at that time, nobody even owned the land the land they occupied, so, he didn't even own the dirt he was standing on, it was a 99 year lease.

I just went elsewhere and caught a bunch of fish anyway .

Didn't our country's ancestors fight a civil war about that issue almost 160 years ago? Anyway, we all know that with enough money we can always buy our own land to hunt and shoot on. Of course, even if you buy it outright, you still don't completely own it because you still have to pay state and local property taxes on it, or face foreclosure. But I digress.

I think being a relatively gun-friendly state can exarcebate the problem of finding an affordable, less crowded, decent place to shoot. The more guns Texans buy, and the more Texans who buy guns, makes finding a place for all of them to shoot their new guns that much more in demand. So the best most of us can do is try to get on a waiting list to the nearest, most affordable members-only club, which for many like me is at least an hour away or more. And in the meantime shoot at private, albeit more crowded, ranges open to the public.

Well, hold on to your hats.

Stinky little whitetail deer weren't much more than crop stealing pests many years back, and almost any farmer would gladly let you hunt them for free.

Enter the rich out of staters, and suddenly , they became a cash crop.

Before I go any further , I know there are people here that if you were told that people would charge for water, you would be looking for some nice young men in their clean white coats.

But, here we are, and it costs more than gasoline.

Errr K, back to hunting. Bunch of rich ass Yankee doctors and laywers stole that crap right out from under us, and now, have the prices so jacked, the average working Joe can't afford a lease.

What's worse? Paying to hunt pigs!!! That's like paying someone so you can get rid of rats or roaches in their house!

Sooo...now, everyone with a gun has to pay.

That’s only half the story. Not even the important half, IMO.

Sure, some big ranches cater to high school end hunters and the fun times to be had whacking hogs has led to it becoming a business.

But, the average farmer/rancher that rejects hunters has totally different reasons. Every one of them will tell you many stories of people coming out and damaging their land, leaving gates open, shooting a cow, etc. The difficulty in finding someone willing to let you on their land has more to do with the idiots that came before than financial gains.

We moved from Pittsburgh PA to Springtown (not far from Azle) I January 2017. We had the same experiences, many houses sold while we were looking at them. Springtown is expanding too fast and I want to move already. We only have 2 acres so no shooting here, that's a bummer. My commute into DFW airport is anywhere from 48 minutes to an hour and a half. I thought Pittsburgh tunnel traffic was bad haha.

But anyway, a late welcome to Texas.

Are you in Parker or Tarrant county. Check the law. Parker county restricts use of firearms in platted subdivisions only. At least it was this way 2 years ago. I had a conversation with SO deputy. He checked status of my 2.5 acres, admired my new S&W and left.

I was in Dallas this week for work, and I had a discussion with a local regarding the influx of Californians and New Yorkians moving down here. He mentioned that he has a few new neighbors that are from these areas, and they all have "BETO" signs in their front yard...

They say they are with us, but they are bringing their failed liberal beliefs with them.
