In around three months I’m going to get a new or newer rig. No older than 2014. Currently my 2004 Nissan Titan is on my last nerve. I don’t want to put anymore money into it. I have beaten the piss out of it. This morning too, a bad driver destroyed my driver side mirror assembly. Whhaaat? Mentally handicapped drivers in the metroplex? I know...no way.

What do you guys prefer? Texas is really different than Oregon but any of you guys go from a 4wd to a 2wd pick up? Hate it/like it? For hunting a bed is nice and as much as I would enjoy a suv or crossover that got 25-30 mpg, do I dare? Any Texas hunters and outdoorsman go from a truck to a smaller suv?

I could go back to Nissan but I’m giving the Tacoma and Silverado a heavy consideration.

If you're not dragging much, or hauling too much, I think the xterra is an awesome platform for on/off road.
Barring that, the current generation jeep Cherokee is worth a look.
But, I tow and haul and go to nasty places, so I stick with full size trucks with 4x4 .

I should have asked how accessible hunting areas or more remote camping areas will be. I’m not gonna rock crawl lol, but I only needed 4wd and higher clearance for winter time.

I’m also curious about a Jeep Cherokee. Would love to find a diesel one.

I can't answer your hunting and camping areas questions.
But, I'm afraid you're about to be disappointed.
Texas is pretty much private property once you leave the pavement.

Yep. Most camping will be corps of engineer land or state parks. A few private camp grounds scattered around. Generally paved roads and improved sites.

The places near me that used to be unimproved and might need 4wd if it had rained recently are no longer accessible. They got pipe rails put up blocking access about 10 years ago. Same time the Corps renovated most of the local camp grounds.

Get an early ‘90s Chevy, Dodge, or Ford 4wd. Put just slightly oversize tires. Don’t go crazy. Don’t make them stick out past the genders or you’ll look like you crossed the southern border.

    You’ll blend in just fine.

Yes that is something I was reading. Not like I’m surrounded by National forest like I used to be. That’s why I’m entertaining a change of vehicle. I’ll be able to shoot at my father in laws and find a range near euless.

The 1/2 ton diesel trucks could really be something if they weren't choked down with all the emissions garbage. Still, they get pretty good mileage, just not many will see any savings when you factor in the price difference in the motor and cost of fuel.

I drive the bigger pick ups, so can't provide much insight on the 1/2 tons. I used to drive Chevy's, but they always seemed to start breaking down on a regular basis and it was time to get rid of them around 185,000 miles unless you wanted to miss one day of work each month.

Thanks. I would enjoy a diesel but if I could find one in a little rig. I’m really interested in the Colorado diesel. Only thing I don’t like with newer diesel rigs is exhaust fluid. My favorite to drive was a 7.3 from 99. If I found a low miles 7.3 I’d buy it. I love the 7.3 even though I would never utilize the truck for its intended purpose.

Though when I towed with my Titan to Texas I wished I had a diesel for low rpm. That Titan gas tows just fine except for it’s gearing. Too tall. Plenty of areas in Utah that would have been nice to have a 7.3 or something with lower gearing.

The exhaust fluid isn’t really that big of a deal. I drive a 2017 Duramax and I put one container in about every 2500 miles. A factory stock 3/4 ton, 4X4, crew cab, long bed getting over 20 mpg on the highway is almost unheard of. I’ve towed 18,000 pounds at 80 mph and gotten 15 mpg.

It doesn’t snow much here. It will ice; 4WD won’t help with ice.

I test drove an eco diesel Grand Cherokee in CO. It was nice and the motor wasn’t the same one in the Ram with all its problems.

I think the diesel option was only available in the high end option packages.

Cherokees have had reliability problems with electrical harnesses. I’d stay away from them.

Given a Taco or a Silverado, I’d go for a Taco with the manual trans, but I’m not sure that was available with 4WD. You’ll probably get more value with the Silverado as they’re a dime a dozen and they depreciate pretty quickly.

Looking forward, I’ll probably replace my current ‘10 F150 with a nearly new Hemi Ram 1500 4WD in a few years.
