Volume trumps insulation. Can't alter air temperature much in a very, very well insulated 10,000' warehouse with a 1500 watt heater.;)
Think of it this way- with insulation levels low enough, you're trying to heat all the air around the car.... can't get much more volume than that.

WRONG!!! There is no air transfer , and the door panels are plastic with a dead air space.

Roll the windows up in summer or down in winter and notice the difference. Even body heat raises the temperature in a car.

Besides, I have a solar heater!!! ( When it's not cloudy.) But , yeah, I don't expect to go out in shorts and a t-shirt, but a few degrees and a defroster would be nice.

EDIT: With insulation levels low enough. ...true, but vehicles have moderate insulation. And not much heat transfer , really , except for the glass.

There are 3 ways to transfer heat... convection (transfer of air you mention), radiation (this is why you can feel the heat coming off your engine), and conduction.

Poorly insulated doors, single pane windows will lose heat very quickly thru conduction, and some thru radiation.

Part of the fundamentals required to get an engineering degree are laws of thermodynamics.

If body heat works well enough, I don't know why you're saying it's a problem...

Because I don't have enough bodies, and eventually they cool down and I have to get more.

That does it, time to bring in the gas grill!

But hey, it's my problem, my vehicle, my problem to fix my vehicle.

Meantime, no long trips if they can be avoided. Man up a little. Extension cord and a small electric heater if it actually gets cold. Paper towel defroster, and I'll get by. Here's a thought : fix the heater?

Anyway , I asked if anyone had used one that worked , not if in theory why they couldn't, or if they were engineers.

No heat, no AC, crappy gas mileage. ...beats the hell out of walking.

I once had a 1980 Chevy luv and my driver side window shattered. No rain, but some snow. All you need sloppy is a good coat and a beanie. Gtg! Remember, the faster you go the faster it’s over with. “If ur not first ur last”. I was always last. She wasn’t geared to go fast. The heater didn’t work but because you have airflow moving it won’t fog up. Lmao

My point is...it could always be worse, somehow

Wait a cotton pickin minute!!! Did I ask for sympathy and not JUST say it beats walking???

Don't know about that faster is better stuff. I have a jonboat with a 2hp. motor.

Had a buddy with a bass boat. I can tell you , it's better at 5mph than at 65 mph.

Anyway, thanks for nothing you bunch of jerks!!!! ( Damn, I need to find that sarcasm emoji), I will answer my own question. I ordered one on Amazon and I'll let you know how well it works. I'll bet by the time it gets here that truck will be warmer inside.

I'm not expecting to strip clothes off, but a defogger and something to warm a hand up, anything!!! is better than nothing. The hungrier you get, the better a can of Spam looks, hungry enough .....Alpo.

A REAL heater is the factory one operational before the next cold...( this isn't really cold) snap hits.

I do like to prepare ahead though, in case that doesn't happen , even if it takes the supreme effort of placing an order on Amazon and taking it out of the box. :clown:

When I was stationed in North Dakota, I had a 62 Volkswagon Bus (smart, huh?).
Anyhow it had a supplemental gasoline heater that sorta worked. I ended up with an under dash 115 VAC electric heater that I'd leave running at night (barrack's parking lot had plug-ins). I also bought a portable propane catalytic heater I mounted on a board so it could ride on the passenger seat, pointed at me.
It all sorta worked except for that -60 degrees F. thing.
    Try the catalytic heater.

I've got a big catalytic heater that goes on top of a 20 lb. tank. Passed out in the sunroom one night, woke up with a cooked knee. Not kidding , it actually cooked the top layer of flesh, slow cooker style. I'm shivering right now, I need to bring that sucker in here.

I actually have a small ceramic heater that I can plug in. Turn on the oven if need be and crack the door. Bathroom heater. Fan in the hallway. But, I'll probably just go get the coveralls.

Back to the 12v heater. With the Central AC out, I had one small window unit for awhile (now have 2), anyway, close to where I sit and sleep I had one of those Artic Air mini-swamp coolers. Didn't do much to change the house temp, but made it much more comfortable and even let me run those window units less. Again , I need to fix the problem , but I survived the summer in relative comfort, with a reasonable electric bill.

I don't need a whole lot. If I had a tent set up , with a sleeping bag inside it, I would probably sleep outside tonight.
