I use to shoot some weddings and events on the side and I would visit a few photo forums. I think sometimes we become equipment centric. Lot of possibilities for a carbine and heck, it doesn't even have to be a carbine. Think tactics and take action and regardless if you got a snubby or an AR with a light, you'll probably come out on top. That Said, My AR pistol in 300BLK with light and sling is within reach.

If you have never watched the movie: "Treasures of Siera Madre" you need to watch it. I'm a fan of Bogart movies and this one is a classic.

I have considered a lever action for self defense. Something like a 30/30 or a Henry lever 45 long Colt.
Better than nothing, but you're handicapping yourself. You can get a decent enough AR15 for the same price as a lever gun these days.

I'd recommend some cowboy action matches for practice if you're serious about using that level of tech. Those guys that are competitive could definitely defend themselves with a lever gun.

What about the pump action carbines? I shot one in .357 once and really liked it. Dude was selling it... I shoulda bought it

I'm not advocating but I've always been fascinated by the pump-action rifles that take AR or AK mags or are simply based on those designs.
    • Takes AR mags
      • Remington produced the 7615P, which looked just like your grandad's hunting rifle.
    • AR-design based
      • Troy still lists some AR-based designs for sale.
      • ComGraf has their AR pump conversion though I don't know if it's still made.
    • AK-design based
      • Kalashnikov produced the KSV223, a pump based on the AK for the Russian IPSC team. I don't know if it actually went into production or if any ever made it to the U.S.
      • PAR-1 AK pump rifles hit the press and there were at least a few floating around before the supply of them apparently dried up.
In particular, the Troy intrigues me. It's light, has an adjustable buttstock that folds to the side, and doesn't use gas for any job but to push bullets out the barrel thus making it simpler to suppress. A .300BO variant might be really, really cool.

I wonder if there are any more variants out there?

I like Remington 76xx's... I bought a 760 for the wife because she likes traditional looking guns (blued with wood stocks), and she thinks the pump action is fun. While it's a fine hunting rifle for typical deer stand distances, it does not hold up well to my style of shooting

I'm sure you appreciate the fact your wife thinks pump action is fun....

Depends on the scenerio. If you are laying in bed and crap hits the fan right now and their are people coming in I want an AK47 (pistiol preferably, pnp). great close range and the bullet wabble they tend to have rips through stuff. shorter barrel easy for clearing your house.

If the crap has already hit the fan and your defending a stronghold I think I would want everyone armed with AR15s in a 6.5 or 308. much more accurate in my experience than the AK platform but I may be wrong there.

If it is doomsday prepping we are talking then you have an armed crew with night vision monitoring your perimiter 24/7. I would think you would want variety. Big ar15 308s at the gate. A couple 270s with night vision scopes. 223s mixed in and ak47 in case your walls are breeched.

This would be my defensive posture and of course the number of people defending and how big your bunker is would determine exact defense.

I was also assuming that this happened in our great state of Texas. The forest of the midwest or Rocky Mountains would also change things.

This discussion is really hard in a forum. So much to say. The more minds the better in this situation. Everyone has strengths and they should be used in this scenerio.

For now, the only long gun is my Marlin Camp 9. Still working on an M1 or something similar. Times a wasting.

Gunbuyer just had a Ruger AR for $569 I think. You can buy a complete lower and then an upper from Palmetto Armory for around $400-450. You better hop to it. M1 Carbine will be more expensive. Everyone needs at least 1 AR.

To All for home defense inb the city, make mine a Remington 7615P with a whole flock of loaded M16 magazines & loaded with JHP.

BUT I would have to get much prized 7615 back from my Darla OR go find another one.
(Until I get another 7615, I'll use one of my 760s in .300SAV or one of the .30-06 rifles with the 10-round mags.)

Fwiw, I looked for >2 years for the 7615 that Darla "adopted as my little carbine". = Hopefully, I won't have to wait for 2 more years for another one.

    yours, tex

I personally prefer the AR in 5.56 simply because it is easier for my wife to shoot and I want to make sure we are using the same ammo so we don’t have to stock/carry multiple different calibers.

If it was just me I would take an AK.
