It’s gay if you did it.
Only if you make eye contact.

Have many rifles chambered in 7.62x39 and would have to say my favorites are my VZ-58 and Arsenal 107FR.
Don't think you can go wrong with a Vepr, Arsenal, Saiga or even a newer production Wasr.

Like the SKS too and wouldn't mind get my hands on a Sam-SF one of these days.

All I have is a WASR10...has straight sights & shoots strait. I also have several AR's & tend to shoot them more. I have been considering a 7.62x39 upper for one of the AR's & see what the difference is on a paper target.

The main difference is what's your budget.
You can build an AR platform in 7.62 cheaper than buying an WASR10 now a days.

I'd vote for an SKS too. Enjoyable to shoot. I've shot a lot of AK's but I just find them uncomfortable whacking me in the cheek every time I pull the trigger. I know you said semi auto, but there are a number of newish bolt guns that look like they'd be a hoot too.

    There are some alternates to AK;
PTR-32, a G3-style roller locking rifle. Heavy. I have one
M10x, similar to SIG 500 series. I have one
SIG 500 (is it the 550r?)
    SKS
    VZ-58.
Galil ACE. AK done right... I want one

Not an "assault" rifle but ...... I have a bolt action CZ 527 in 7.62x39 that is a tack driver (it has a factory set trigger).

True. I carried an "assault" rifle, and qualified on one for five years. A 14 inch M-4, that was safe/semi/and full auto. A semi-auto made for the civilian market does not qualify as an "assault" weapon.

The CZ 527 isn’t semi auto.

But I still agree with your post.

    I haven't tried an AR in 7.62x39.

FWIW, some time ago I had read of reliability issues with 7.62x39 AR's in general. The PWS Diablo was pointed out as reliable in a number of reviews.

I have never had a problem with the Sigs or the Diablos.

The new Bren S2 comes in a 7.62xCommie variant. I have an 80's Norinco that just won't die... and an AR pattern 30CalCommie that is super reliable too. If I was to only have one, I'd have an AK pattern over the AR pattern just because it's more "legit" meaning.. you get the real Commie-30 experience with an AK.. or an SKS.

    Gee, where to start?

It would be helpful if you shared a little more criteria on what you are looking for, i.e. price, style, etc.

As stated, your main choices are an AK/AKM or a SKS. There are other rifles in that caliber around, but if you're looking something specifically built for the 7.62x39 round, those are the two you should consider.

Now, despite what some of the unknowing claim, there are differences in Kalashnikov rifles. Simonovs tend to be reliable no matter what the country of origin; but with AKs/AKMs there is a wide variance and you don't want one of the crappy ones. First and foremost, steer clear of anything with "I.O." on it. Same pretty much holds true for anything manufactured by Century (note I said "manufactured," not imported!). While I have an original C39 and it's a superb shooter, it's suffering from the same weird wear issues that plagued most of their AKs. Better just to avoid them. And while you're doing so, the same pretty much holds true for all US-made AK variants. Some are OK, but why bother when there are better (and cheaper) options out there?

As for everything else (basically COMBLOC and Chinese), there's been several threads about those on here so do a little searching. If you read those threads and still have questions, let us know.

Lastly, what's your price range and intended use of the rifle? If the latter is just range use, that can change the recommendation; but if you're going to be serious and train with it, that will drive a different dialogue (and price!). Just also note that more expensive doesn't always mean better in all cases.

Best of luck in your research and search, I love that round and have a variety of firearms that shoot it. One of these days I will pick up a bolt action CZ 527 to the collection. Why not, I certainly have enough ammo for it!

    Cheers! M2
