    Gunz are icky.
    Items to discuss........

1.) The .gov has a major bugger burr up their ass about F/A weapons. Always has. As goofy as it is they will destroy you over an incorrctly obtained one.

2.) Anyone who has been around the gun hobby for more than 15 miinutes knows this. If you go there you better have the paperwork in order.

3.) Observe what happens when MJ enters the picture.
Gunowner+ MJ(even if legally obtained) = unwelcome visit from The Man.
Be careful what you ask for.

4.) There is a rat bastard somewhere.

    True.

It didn’t really sound like he was “in the hobby” though. According to the article they had collected “14 weapons” during their marriage. That could include bayonets and numerous other items. Sounds more like he was more of a collector than a gun guy.

I was gonna guess his wife's family, since it was 2 weeks after she died. Would love to see the search warrant.

Yep. Maybe somebody was looking for their inheritance and he wasn’t cooperating. Or the wife made adjustments to the will and dropped some ungrateful children. All speculation of course.

Then again, I wonder if the other VN vet they interviewed had something to do with it.

If he was showing it to others, I'm sure at some point someone would have pointed out the facts.

The sentence does seem harsh, but....

    Three rules to live by:

#1. Do not break the law.
#2. If you break the law do not trust anyone enough to tell them.
#3. Do nothing that requires you to apply rule #2.

Many years ago a good friend told me he possesses a Vietnam carry-back XM177 carbine. Asked if I wanted to see it!
I told him no uncertain terms what a dumb ass he was for even telling me about it.

If someone shows up at my place with a firearm with an obliterated serial number I'd offer to do them the favor of torch-cutting it into a law-abiding bunch of pieces.

    Harsh sentence, but he knew.

But did he really break the law?

Marbury v. Madison: "A law repugnant to the Constitution is void."

Not saying that I would ever recommend that level of overt defiance (civil disobedience), but can't fault someone for making that choice (if peaceful/private), and while that's a crap situation, one potentially positive outlook is that now he's in the shit and has both legal Standing as well as a sympathetic perspective; hopefully he'll get a really good lawyer who can go for the jugular on this issue.

May not be a lawyer myself, but would think that between "Marbury v. Madison" and "U.S. v. Miller" (and potentially friendlier SC), with the right lawyers he might have a fighting chance to pull the rug out on several long-standing abominations.

It's a damn shame about the MJ being involved to cloud the issue (no pun intended)...
