I don't fly much and haven't since I have had my CHL, about 10 years.

I am wondering how long it takes to get your bag checked by TSA and through security. I know the details on how to pack.

I'm curious as my return trip will be tight for time.

    Thanks!

Its only bad during rush hour.....and the way they schedule now, if your gettin on a plane?....its rush hour.

Arrive early, or even better, stay at the airport (you know, something in the HYATT class), check-in, run through security, visit the bar!

Yeah, I try to avoid it, air travel. So I'm just mainly wondering what the added delay is for getting the bag checked in.

Which airport? It varies greatly. PDX always has long lines for instance, makes being a frequent flier club or precheck really worth it.

    Oh yea....the luggage secret.

If it doesnt go in your backpack...it doesnt go.

The wife and I did Hawaii and another week on the westcoast out of one (small) backpack. Now I admit, 2 people for 2 weeks, we did stop and wash once, but traveling light is a big key. I also learned to love regional jets. Quick on, quick off. A 757 loading or unloading on the Hawaii run about kills me.

So, close proximity or early arrival...
    Minimal accoutrement...
Enter airport & straight through short security line (early)
Stop at Mickey D's or Blasto O'rourkes bar (am or pm)
    Easy on...easy off...
    Enjoy your flight

This is my approach for the majority of (work related) travel, with the addition of TSA Pre & CBP Global Entry to help avoid too much wasted time. Only exception is if I'm traveling with firearms for some reason, then it's all about getting there early.

Also, on the topic of early arrival - need to give a shout-out for Minute Suites. Starting to see them in a couple locations (DFW has one in Terminal D). Small private (lockable) suite with bed/table/TV/power/internet/etc., right in the middle of the Terminal. Truly epic, hope to see them become more common.

You Sir are my new hero...I don't ever expect to have that option for any non-solo trips ;)

Before osama and obama, I didn't mind air travel.
I didn't mind air travel right after Osama. I had to fly a lot in the weeks right after 9/11 and there was quite a period when the airports were virtually empty and a half-dozen people on a plane was an unusually high number.

Since then, things have gone to hell. Last time I needed to go to California, I actually drove. I could take guns, all the luggage I wanted, I had my transportation while I was there...the advantages were numerous. I'm pretty convinced that inside CONUS, I'll drive. Planes, for me, are for crossing oceans.

I was flying commercial for a TDY right after 9/11 and remember the same thing.

    Ghost towns.

I have flown maybe 4 times in the last 20 years. On of the times was on 9/11. I was in the air on the way to Orlando. What are the odds...

"Before osama and obama, I didn't mind air travel."

    My thinking too.

As it stands, I've been to enough foreign lands, including california.

The only way I'll travel by air is if I'm blown up!

"Totally depends on the airport and which agent you run into. 2 hours is a good buffer if you are worried. Google the airport and you should be able to get a feel for the wait."

And it changes from time to time and agent to agent. I fly and carry all the time so i have learned to build in extra time for it. Usually an hour. Just flew from Austin to Atlanta and back. Going was handled completely different than ever before and took zero extra time. On return was treated like a criminal when they searched every orifice of my bag and had to wait in line for nearly an hour. Watched them check every golf club and ball in a guys bag for explosives residue. I expect they were on some type of special watch. SO it also depends on what they are looking for i think.

Thanks, that is what I was looking for. I have 2 1/2 hours to leave my appointment till flight time in Nashville. About a 10 mile drive to the airport. I am thinking it might be tight.
