They have an old folks home on campus. Getting old isn't related to military service. There's non service connected disability.

If you signed the blank check on your life. You qualify for it. And there's not a person earth that's going to take anything away from veterans. Service connected or not. It's a benefit to offering your life in the service of the country.

The best way to avoid the VA is to not serve at all. Problem fixed.
I disagree. When you get out (without retiring) you take that check back. Non service related injury benefits should stop.

The VA shouldn't cover you for everything forever. Taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for that.

I think there’s a balance to be had. The vast majority of military members, both officer and enlisted, do not serve long enough to qualify for an active duty or reserve retirement.

Yet in some career fields, we destroy their bodies through exposure to radiation that doesn’t show up until years down the road.

DoD, thru the VA, has an obligation (in my mind) to take care of those things.

Hydrazine exposure, for example, is limited to people who work on/around F-16s.

It’ll also turn you into a cancer ridden mad hatter over time. The problem is you can’t really trace the cancers directly back to hydrazine exposure. But it sure is coincidental.

Serving during an armed conflict, grunt or support, will often take away something that can't ever be put back ... realizing that might be as simple as asking the person who sleeps next to you every night, and puts up with you ... check in with your wife.

There are Vietnam Vets and Vietnam Era Vets. Vietnam Vets served in Country. You can obtain a copy of his DD Form 214 with some of redacted that outlines his service. I consider a person who claims a veterans disability falsely to be a crook. Usually, the false claimers will have done a faked-up DD 214 to submit to the VA. I attended a class in Ft. Carson, Colorado and the Instructor showed us how easy it is to change a document using Microsoft paint to edit it. Having worked with military records for a long time I can sense if something isn't right or doesn't jive. Sometimes some slips through. My job was to review documents personnel submitted on their permanent digital file as a civilian. We are talking about some high ranking Officer's and NCOs that do stupid stuff and get caught. As well as enlisted folks You look at the overall record and ask why they did it because they already have an impressive record. Plus some stuff you do in the military can injure you or cause weird stuff to happen. I have some problems that I attribute to the Lariam they gave us overseas. I have a crapload of documents and letters from the Dod and VA. They have discontinued the use of Lariam. I have a friend who was an Agent Orange Veteran who has some problems. The military needs to step up and stop using members as lab rats.

    Dallas Texas or so
There are something like 30 diseases that are presumptively caused by agent orange. Anyone who spent 24 hours or so in country is presumed to have drank the water. Agent Orange got into the streams which became our water supply and their was no way to remove it.

Naturally, the VA doesn't notify Vets of changes even if you are already getting some level of disability.

Just this year, my disability went from 70% to 90 to 100%. The stop at 90 was because of changes to meds That the VA prescribed. I found out about it when I stopped by the benefis office to ask about something else. The benefits guy looked at my records---medical and all. He told me he didn't know how much of a raise I would get but it would be some.

sorry for rambling but just rember to stop by your local benefits office to see if any changes to your meds or health would get you more benefits. Twice a year with any other appointment is a good interval.

Yup , I have some unfiled claims for Meniere's Disease related to the Lariam. The only way to cure it is cut the nerve to the ear. I have spent a few hours on it puking into a trash can plus I can't walk during an attack also for Sleep Apnea they put me on a CPAP. I didn't ask for it the VA Doc insisted I take the Sleep Study. I also had a surgery back in Dec of 2017 that was related to an injury overseas to my right hand that isn't 100% functional. I got my first claim approved within 6 months it was done by a VFW Rep. My second Claim was also approved in 6 months and I did that one by myself. I asked questions about what the VFW guy did. I need to put these ones in. I am fully retired from the military and Dod Civilian Employment. Retirement as a civilian was mandatory at age 60. I would like to work but my health issues prevent me from working.

My draft board lady saved me from being exposed to Agent Orange. God bless her.

My draft board lady, during my interview after getting letter from LBJ, with me asking for just 3 more months to finish college, looked at me and simply said: "My son is in Vietnam!"

End of interview ... Good morning, Vietnam!

100% changes a lot of stuff. It's $3086 per month for the rest of your life. That's if it's service connected which it is. So figure out what it'd take to make $3000 after taxes and health insurance. Give it some perspective.

    Zero property tax in Texas.

Now you can get dental through the VA.

I am retired military and Civil Service. The military is no longer offering dental to retirees. Luckily the dental insurance they had suggested I already have through my civil service retirement. I am not at 100% yet for this property taxes :(

Beware. You might find that ANY DV property tax exemption is on a county by county basis in Texas.

In Harris county the maximum exemption is $12k for a disabled Vet of less than 100% ONLY if:
    • You have a disability rating of 100% disabled or of individual unemployability.
on your homestead, and even that can be further disallowed by the various taxing districts within the county ... municipal, hospital, school, etc.

IOW a total fark'n rip off when the appraisal on your homestead goes through the roof ... paying lie to the concept of private property ownership in Texas.

Foregoing paying the extortion rate of even deferring taxes, at 8.5%/year, and see how far "private ownership" gets you.

My Mom had to get an U.S. Senator involved to get my WW2 Grandfather his benefit s from the VA. He was in 1936 till 1962. They said there were gaps in his record due to a fire in New Orleans! We got his stuff fixed and He got his services!

I have extra people on mine. Some stooge at a VA computer entered the records of another veteran into mine. A veteran that's 15+ years older then me with some heavy duty medical problems.

Now I get asked the most incredibly funky crap during doctor visits.
