I got a buck a few weeks ago and have been working on the euro mount myself. I have all the meat except the upper nostrils cleared out.
Here’s a stock photo for reference:

I cleaned out the main nostrils where all those fragile bones are but there’s a cavity up above that. (If you turn a skull upside down, look at the roof of the main nostril “tube” and it’s that area that has the meat)

    Any tips?
    Thanks

Use a plastic bore brush for a 410 or 20ga. You can also try a Glock bore brush. Toothbrush too. The military jobber that has the small brush on the end.

Plastic bristle is the key word here. Metal brushes will score the bone. Use lots of dawn soap

After that, make some scrapers out of something. That'll reach into the cavity and get the crud the brushes missed.

Be super careful cleaning around the front nostril bones. As I'm sure you know already. They're thin and fragile.

I was told they boil the crap out of the skull to get all that stuff out, with some sort of chemicals. I always have mine done, but have asked about technique before.

    But, yes, fireants.

I used a cup of Borax. Fill the pot with just enough to cover the skull (suspend the skull by the anters/horns so it does not rest on the bottom of the pot). I don't think that there is anything in Borax that would discolor hard antlers.

    Fireants don't work.

They start building a mound around and in the skull. They don't carry the meat off. They set up shop and eat it there. They'll even try to bury the skull. The dirt stains the hell out the skull. On top of having to fight the fireants off.

If you have raccoon, opossum, dog, stray cat, rats and mice. You can't set the skull outside.

Wax the antlers during cleaning and bleaching.

    Fireants will phuck it up.

Put it in a cage to keep varmints from gnawing on it and use a little peroxide on the skull when the fire ants are done with it. Mine come out just fine.
