All three military exchanges are non-appropriated fund activity (NAF) of the Department of Defense, the exchange services fund 98% of their operating budgets (civilian employee salaries, inventory investments, utilities and capital investments for equipment, vehicles and facilities) from the sale of merchandise, food and services to customers.

This means almost all of their bills (to include merchandise buying) are paid ‘at the register’. Since there is very little house brand items that could drive higher income margins, the exchanges have to charge at least cost + cost of doing business.

For some items (liquor and gas, primarily) the exchanges survey the local market and attempt to be just below the market prices.

Places like Walmart and other discount/low cost chains will always beat the exchanges on price.

Where you find the savings is generally on name brand clothing.

The firearms are purchased through major distributors and must adhere to distributor pricing policies as well as help pay the bills at the register.

Just to add that exchanges incorporate any "profits" they make back into the military community/installation.

Additionally, given their "price matching guarantee," if you download the Gun Deals app to your smart phone, and get the lowest price for a weapon being sold at the exchange, they will match that price. You not only end up getting the best price, but no taxes, shipping or FFL fees!

Lastly, from experience I have never seen on-base gas prices any cheaper than off-base.

Vortex Optics and others offer military discount programs. I have also gotten a 40% discount at Planet Optics by calling them for their program.

Also if you are a veteran you can use the Exchange system by making online orders. Plus they have the Exchange Mall with vendors also.

I was in the Abilene Exchange yesterday, and they didn’t have any firearms related bargains. PMAG’s were $18, and 308 PMAG’s were $25.

Experticity/Expert Voice has a military service option to ‘qualify’

I’ve seen the Worksharp Ken Onion for $75 there.
    Another +1 for Expert Voice.

You still have to check pricing as some brands have fantastic deals, but others not so much.

Actually ordered the Worksharp KO and Blade Grinder attachment last week, expecting delivery this week...

Me either. We asked about prices at NAS JRB Ft. Worth and they told us they only go as low as the gas stations right off base. They won’t beat them and wouldn’t consider the ones a half mile down the road. I never bought gas from them again.

Troy has a running 60% discount on some some of their AR parts, furniture and other parts, plus they honor my military discount on top of that. I picked up a 15” MLok carbon fiber rail for my LR-308 for $140 to my door. I know that had some issues with a leadership decision some time back, but their stuff is combat tested and SGM Kyle Lamb approved and used by him. Their folding sights are the gold standard imo.

You can contact Troy for their mil discount, you just need to provide your bona fides - ID card, DD214 etc. I assume LEO creds also work. If you are military/veteran and want more info PM me.

One kinda cool think I ran into the other day - not necessarily mil discount but I was buying something from Optics Planet. Not super expensive but it was a PRC-152 radio pouch that was priced well with my VIP (military) pricing. I know they always have coupons running but after searching the internet I could only find a 5% discount. I tried this plugin called Honey. Basically when you get to a website they support and you are in the page where you enter the coupon code they run a script that goes through every coupon available until it finds the one with the biggest discount, which turned out to be a 10% coupon.

I disable the plugin and only turn it on when I want to find a good discount. Find it, use it, and then disable it. I do believe they track and consume or maybe sell that intel. Nothing is for free. But at any rate it’s a pretty neat tool. I know they work at Optics Planet as mentioned and also Amazon. I would imagine their plugin works for a lot or several big box online retailers.

Well that was easy. I do get their mil discount. For whatever reason when I did my first search I came up dry. Probably startpage.com issues.

I bought a Daniel Defense barrel from them a couple of years ago. Best price on the internet.

If you have the option, you might consider getting your service emblem on your credit card. I have the EGA on mine, and it usually prompts the cashier to ask if I want their military/veteran discount, when I didn't know they offered one.

    oohrah; All,

There are so many THOUSANDS of AD, TXNG, EX-GIs & us military retirees in The Alamo City metro area that virtually EVERY business here gives a 10-25% discount to us.
(I nearly always wear my MPC retired cap & seeing that, the clerk usually doesn't even ask for my ID - He/she just automatically gives me the discount..)

    yours, satx
