Talking about the cap and ball Remington (often referred to as the 1858 Remington).

I was able to save one pistol from my percussion pistol collection - a Pietta Remington New Army "Sheriff's" model. This has a shortened barrel - 5 1/2" instead of the 8" barrel of the original. It's not really historically correct but apparently, some were modified like this by local gunsmiths.

I like the design - especially how easy it is to take down and the fact that it has a top strap and the rear sight is milled into the frame rather than being a notch in the hammer like the Colt designs.

If you're one that likes the conversion cylinders, this is so much easier to use with them than the Colts with their wedges.

Anybody else here have a Remington New Army?

I have a New Army and a Sheriff's model. Really fun to shoot with either cylinder. I carry the Sheriff model sometimes when I walk the dog at night with snake shot in it. The longer barrel is much more accurate for shooting though. I reload Cowboy Action, Black Powder and snake shot for them. 35 gr BP loads are a blast to shoot. Literally.

Cimarron Sheriffs model is near the top of my list. Right after I finish putting together a Contender .30 Herrett.

I had a Walker- Uberti. Very cool but not practical really, unless you have a horse lol

I was able to fix the falling loading lever too. I could get 50 grains of powder in the cylinders but I never chrono'd it...

I've got a repro New Army. I like it a lot. I've got a couple of other BP revolvers, but that's my favorite to shoot. The 1851 navy I've got has such a weird feel in my hand, it pretty much resides in the safe.

I'm guessing you have larger hands... most people like the feel of the 1851.

I like the balance of my Remington Sheriff. The grip is fine but I prefer the Colt 1860's grip over all others.

Everone needs a cap and ball revolver. Even if a reproduction. They are a good reninder of how far handguns have come.

Well for some unfortunate souls that reside in areas that make it hard to impossible to own a regular handgun, these are a good option - though, those areas also generally regulate cap and ball revolvers too...

Some think these are a good "prepper" item but I don't think they're any better than modern revolvers and autoloaders because you still need to have the caps and other components and making them still requires that you have the ingredients which are probably more bothersome to get than loaded ammo or modern components for reloading.

I just like messing with them. They are a slow, methodical shoot and the smoke just adds to the experience.

A good "middle ground" is getting a conversion cylinder which allows you to shoot standard pressure 45 Colt rounds out of these. That is, not +P. Still a little slow to load but much quicker than cap and ball.
