Danish Style canned hams cost about the same as Spam, but more in the can. Also instant coffee,as bad as it is. Bottled fruit juice, Twinkie's last forever. Or, go to an military surplus supply and get MRE's.

I'm swinging by army surplus today and I'm buying another Israeli citizen gas mask. I currently have only one.

Surplus sells them brand new, still in the wrapper with a new sealed filter.

    They run about ~$25 bucks.

    (They have child sizes too)

Of course. However, our country has gone through catastrophic situations like this before. The Civil War and The Great Depression for example.

Texas during Reconstruction was a very violent place.

My gg-Grandfather lost everything, moved out of Dallas County and became a tenant farmer. His family survived and thrived.

His brother in law became a violent criminal who continued to fight the Yankees and raided East Texas and Arkansas. He was dead in 4 years.

Yes, reconstruction was a violent time.......we have a huge population to compared to that time and a much more violent society. If vehicles aren't moving neither will LEO's......anyone thinking they can protect their home by themselves....well.......

Things will be worse than most can imagine and it will be quick, violent and lawless.

    Starving children will be tough......

Good men will have to make tough decisions......

ETA: how long will the water remain potable?
Good question. Depends on all factors affecting it.
    Location it was gathered.
    Open to the air?
    Filtration when gathered?
Treatment (chemical or mechanical) when collected, while sitting, and when consumed.
    Exposure to light?
    Exposure to heat?
    Circulation?

A lot depends on what you are expecting to consume. Fresh water out of the tap style? It takes a lot of work to make that happen by-the-way. Good for days depending on exposure to airborne filth. Bottled? IE: canteen? Weeks with a good seal. Collecting rainwater? Then your planning on boiling before consumption and its all potable forever.

Chlorine in your water is good for about 3 days when exposed to the air. If it cannot evaporate and is out of the sun then it stays in the water fairly indefinitely. But there will always be a "dab" of air in any bottle and that air contains bacteria. Sun and time will create algae etc.

My question was related to water held in the container which GHG selected.
I was thinking fresh water from a garden hose.

    Good questions.

    1. The container is black. If water is kept in total darkness. Algae won't grow.

    1.5. It's a sealed container.

    2. I have a couple of ceramic survival filters.

    3. Bleach can be and should be added at intervals.

    4. Excess chlorine can be chemically converted using plain old Vitamin C.

    Here's the doses required,

Other options are boiling the water but that takes energy. According to the world of ceramic filters. It'll remove anything living that'll make you sick. With a 1-2 punch. Filtering and then bleach. It'll be potable.

I need a five gallons of regular strength, no scent added Bleach. Besides cleaning water. It has medical applications. If you don't have Hydrogen peroxide. Bleach will do the same in a stronger way if used undiluted.

Or I could get 30% hydrogen peroxide. Drops will equal bottles. Hair supply stores carry the 30%. It's used to bleach hair.

I've got a Berkey water filter that will take most of the crap out of the water. I live about 400 feet from a large neighborhood pond (200'x300') and a very large lake about 2500' away. I've also got a battery operated UV sterilizer for water. Food supplies for 3 months.

I love reading "prepper" sites. One thing almost never mentioned is a supply of toilet paper that will last years.

If we have a major catastrophe where the power goes out for more than 2 weeks I have enough fuel and supplies to get where I am going, which won't be here in DFW. I have a plan... BTW.. in 6 months you'll want to be away from any major city... Nuclear power plants have 2 weeks of diesel generator fuel to keep the cooling systems going. After that every last one of them will go into meltdown.

You won't want to be within 100 miles of any of these little blue stars on this map.

I would certainly hope that this is one area that FEMA has a plan for. There aren't that many plants and it wouldn't be that hard to arrange for the fuel to keep the generators running - as a priority. As you say, the alternative is disastrous to everyone regardless of your situation.

There are 60 plants with 98 reactors. That's a lot.
