Those are Leading Edge Slats. Most everything technical these days has them.

However, I have no idea why his are extended at speed (appears to be at speed) Guess the computer obviously called for them.

Probably because he's entering a hard turn. Needs as much wing surface as possible. A lot of older planes (later model F-86's thru F-4's and probably more recent ones) had slats that were automatically deployed by aerodynamic forces in tight turns. Better explanation here: https://www.sectionf8.com/history.html halfway down the third paragraph.

Decided to put this in cool piccys. My oldest has an old Sauer 44mag handed down from grandpappy. He's pretty mechanically minded and has it cleaned up and shooting great but it has chintzy plastic handles that dont fit. One of his days off recently he decided to build a set for it. Pretty decent work if I do say so myself. No finish on em yet.

Leading edge slats have been around for many years. On my favorite aircraft, the Bf-109, they are operated by the low pressure acting on the leading edge, there is no motor to operate them. They allow greater maneuverability at high angles of attack and prevent one wing from stalling before the other.

    Operation on the 109 models.

Here's some of the aviation art I have on my walls. I have a lot of old pictures I've collected too that I would like to frame. Anyone else collect?
