Since it's not my money, FN SCAR 17.

Barring that, I'd go with an AR10.

I love the Garand platform but Springfield M1As are a lot of cash for a cast receiver.

There is No AR on earth that will ever equal an MIA. And ARs are a dime a dozen hell a kid can put one together While watching TV. Ps Springfield has added the 6.5 To the lineup.

What!? Seriously it was the shortest lived service rifle, it’s heavy, it’s cast, and it rattles it’s self apart. It is literally old world technology. Even better the ones you can buy are made by a company that has NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING to do with the armory who’s name they use.

I have both and love them both. The sound of the M1A bolt closing is one of the coolest sounds in the world. I have a SOCOM 16, currently has ProMag stock, which I like. Replace the op rod and run it. Want more space for tactical parts either get a SOCOM II or add VLTOR rail to any of them. There are also some nice chassis for them.

My standard M1A shot MOA groups all day long, right out of the box. With a little work (trigger, piston, gas shims, springs), I consistently shoot 4" groups at 600 yds with reloaded ammo.
A National Match may shoot better. So might a high quality AR10. But for me, it does everything I need and more.
YMMV. Good luck with your decision!

AR10 is a better value dollar for dollar.......easier maintenance and can be just as accurate (if not more).....definitely more versatile......

    I own both.....love shooting both.........

But for sentimental reasons only.........I am fonder of the M1A....

Been seeing some deals lately and started wondering what the next rifle should be. Been wanting a 7.62/.308 but can't decide between "AR-10" and M1A.

    What are you guy's thoughts?
The big question is what do you want to do with it? And here is why, putting glass on a M1A can be an ordeal. First optic I put on my SOCOM 16 was an Eotech, worked fine for a hog hunting trip. I don’t like scout style scopes, personal preference. I want an ACOG. Okay, about $1k for that. Now, how do you mount it? Trijicon and another brand both make ACOG mounts, $500-700, just for the mount. A good rail that elimates the need for a scout scope is also several hundred dollars. You’ll also need a stock with an adjustable riser to bring you up to the glass.

Again, I love my SOCOM 16, it’s fun to shoot, has more character than my ARs and these days it’s a rare breed in an AR world. It’s also one of the last rifles I would sell if I had to have a fire sale. Having said all that, make sure you fully understand the purchase before you jump in. M1As are fun but not as user friendly as the AR market.

Big Green makes some great points.
In my case, to address those issues, I bought a Sadlak Airborne mount and a cheek riser from TNVC. Kept it clean and classic looking.

Well in our current political climate...I woud say we all need a .12 gauge break action loaded up with number 9 skeet loads. That should work. The ladies and transgenders could use a .20 guage till the breastes/penile implants heal up. That only seems fair.

I had a SA Super Match M1A sold that boat anchor after I got older. I used to worship at the altar of the M1A. If and thats a pretty big if I might buy a Socom M1A. I have grown to love the AR 10 line. It can shoot a crapload of different ammo. If M1As are you bag thats okay by me.
