Left at the mesquite tree, right at the pump jack

My Dad gave me Grandpops knife from the Korean War. He saw combat and was a drill Sargent. I wasn't real close to him... he passed before I got old enough to have a cognitive conversation. He was a tough old dude. Doc gave him 6-9 month with lung cancer. He managed to go another 12yrs.

I would like to somehow refurbish the knife... but then again it's cool in its natural form.
It's dull as a butter knife.

Thought I'd share.

Are these knifes rare? Or are there a far share still floating around? I thought about finding a gun like this went one and doing a replication.

Yep. M5 for the Garand.

IMO leave as is.
Oil it to stop rust but please do NOT wire wheel it or anything.
Not particularly valuable but priceless as an heirloom.

Like others said, oil it. Maybe some fine steel wool to knock off the surface rust but keep it oiled.

Use a rust stop of some kind...something with a little phosphoric acid in it to actually kill the rust. Then keep it oiled. Most paint / hardware stores keep similar products.

I agree with other suggestions: Leave as is! Don’t destroy the patina. A thin film of oil or antirust lubricant would be all I’d do to it.

If you want a knife, go buy a new one to play with. Keep the ‘history’ intact. JMHO.
