I like my M1A scout rifle because it takes so little cleaning compared to àn AR type rifle and plus it's just different. Four AR's are enough for me. luckilyI stocked up on 7.62 ammo back when surplus was cheap.

    True story.....

A few weeks ago, we had a young man in an LTC class (early twenties). He took one look at my Springfield M1A NM w/Springfield 4X14X56 Government scope (Gen 3 mount).....and proclaimed....

Whoever put that scope on that gun ruined it. I asked politely...how so?

It's too big a scope........I asked if he ever shoots long range.............

No, but my cousin does and he said you don't need a big scope to shoot long range......

    I smiled.....and resumed the class...............

I'll post a pic of the ruined M1A after Christmas.......

I got talked into the AR cheese wiz and spent a bunch of cash tricking it out trying hard to like it. Fail! It went bye bye at half of what I spent. Just didn’t work out for me.

If y'all want to make this about women, you need to consider something besides the single "sexy" appeal...swinging...

The M1A requires remaining loyal to a single round...in this case, 7.62*51 (AKA .308).

    The AR-10 is more 'flexible"....

You’re a better man than I bro. I can only keep up with so much variety without having to worry about a heart attack or confusion. Be it women, or calibers.

Been seeing some deals lately and started wondering what the next rifle should be. Been wanting a 7.62/.308 but can't decide between "AR-10" and M1A.

    What are you guy's thoughts?

I have an AR10 (Bushmaster) and a full up National Match M14 (yes, a semi-auto only M14). Built by Elton Berry about 30+ years ago. Comparisons are many, I'm a bullseye target shooter. For that, the M14 is way far superior. For a tacticool run & gun rifle, the AR10 is far lighter and offers more flexibility, but not nearly so precise as the M14. So the simple and frustrating answer to your simple question is, "It depends."

I am stuck on iron sights, but, I did put a Springfield 6X40 Government Model 7.62 on mine. It was offered by Springfield at a discount when I bought the M1A. Works fine for my use.

Having owned both the ar10 is more accurate any day. It's a true free float system. Also the weight is less.

I carried a M14 in boot. In August. In the south. Didn't do well with it either. Heavy.
Only qualified at the lowest level with it.

Then I was issued a M16 and qualified expert with it. Go figure!

I'm lost. This gun is less accurate than the AR10 equivalent?

And the AR10 that can outshoot this can be had for less than this?

And comes with all this now?

Um, yeah. Not really hard to do honestly.

But hey, two free mags ($40). AR10s have a scope mount built right in for free.

If that's truly the case, I should probably stop looking at the M1A and just pick up one of the many Precision Rifles out there around the $1K mark that are sub MOA accuracy out of the box (supposedly) :) I was hoping the M1A could pull double duty as precision and hunting.

I had a DPMS Oracle in 308 with a floated tube and new trigger that shot 1/2" groups. That rifle with upgrades ran about $1000.

I currently own a DPMS 3g1 in 308 that I have shot a 1/4" 5 shot group at 100 yards. They go for about $1300.

If sub MOA accuracy is your goal then you have low standards. Most rifles will do that.

If you want an M1A then get one and be happy. But you can be sure for the same money it won't beat an AR style rifle.

The best this author could do with the M1A 6.5CM was right at one inch: https://www.americanrifleman.org/ar...ed-springfield-m1a-loaded-65-creedmoor-rifle/

Not very impressive for that kind of money.

Okay, I’ll weigh in again as rifles have been mentioned with high MSRPs. Again, I love my SOCOM16 and am also a fan of the AR10s I’ve built. I’ve built a very nice 6.5CM that I expect will be able to shoot very well. Not bought, but built. As expensive as the loaded M1A in 6.5CM? No. It is cheaper than its MSRP and probably closer to its street price. But, if we’re going to step up to $2k+ prices I will submit the GA Precision GAP10 as an option. Available in several calibers and has a phenomenal pedigree. I don’t own one, never fired one, never even seen one but it’s reputation proceeds it. I did call about ordering one a few years ago and they would not offer a 15” handguard instead of the 13.5” so I did not order. Nonetheless, to me that is the ultimate .308/6.5CM type rifle and I would love to have one.
