I encountered an issue I never noticed before with my 629-6, so it's gotta go back. The hammer will drop if you hit it... I never noticed this before because I never screw around with the gun with the hammer cocked anyways because it has a really light trigger and I usually shoot immediately after cocking. I luckily found this issue when the gun was unloaded. I want to get that fixed though due to the obvious safety issues it causes. I'm not sure if normal wear and tear caused it, or if the previous owner tried their hand at a trigger job.

I already emailed S&W, and they said they'd pay the shipping. I'm just waiting on the shipping label. I don't think this falls under their warranty, so I might end up footing the bill if they aren't feeling super generous. Any idea what this is gonna cost me?

Its commonly called hammer push off.
Did you get the gun new?

This can happen when someone inexperienced does a trigger job and ends up messing it up.

When I look at a revolver to purchase, among several things, I check for push off.

I dont know what the cost is, but it is not a cheap fix.

Customer service is a very competitive business so you might get lucky.

Let's say a new hammer and sear, that might be $100 but that is just a guess.

Most "gunsmiths" that can't do a proper trigger job also can't use a screwdriver. Are the screw heads buggered up? That could be a good indication if it has been messed with.

Glad you found the issue and are getting it resolved.

You may get lucky and have it covered. I have been suprised by some of the stuff they cover under warranty.

S&W sent you a shipping label. That's a good sign it'll be a freebie. There's too much liability involved for S&W not to fix it for free.

    UPDATE

Just called them today. I was able to get a rep within 5 minutes. They fixed it, and it's on it's way out. They said that they did some work on the trigger and on the yoke. They didn't charge me for it.

Pending on the quality of the work and the condition of the gun, I'd give them a solid A.

    UPDATE

Got the gun back yesterday, and it's fixed. The invoice simple states that the yoke and trigger were repaired. After a safety check, it's ready to start punching holes again. :D

Here's a timeline of the repair process for those interested.

    1/17/2019 - gun shipped to S&W

    1/21/2019 - gun delivered

    2/1/2019 - gun repaired

2/4/2019 - gun shipped back to me

    2/6/2019 - gun delivered

They paid shipping both ways, repaired the gun for free, and did all this despite the gun being over 8 years old and more than likely not covered by their warranty.

They get an A+ from me. :D

Think about the expense they incurred for something that was not their fault.
At least $50 in shipping, parts and probably $150 in labor.
They do this for a few reasons, but I bet one is because of potential lawsuits.
They can produce a perfectly fine revolver , someone unqualified, messes with it and makes it unsafe.
A new owner (Maverick) gets it and sends it in and Smith fixes it at no charge.
That is just top notch to me.

The timing on my 629 suddenly was out after 20 years. It would reliably fire single action but was hit or miss in double action. A gunsmith looked at it and told me it had to the factory. They fixed it and returned it for free.

S&W has good warranty service for owners. Have had as long as I can remember. Never had to send anything in myself, but I have been reading these stories for as long as I can remember.
