I recently bought a used SD9VE in very good condition from Blackjack Gunsmith here in Austin. They had put an Apex trigger in it. They gave me a good price out the door and I was very satisfied. This gun shoots nice with the new trigger in it. So much negativity on YouTube about the original trigger. With this one mod this gun is now a keeper.

I also shot my new Taurus PT22 Poly. Right out of the box without a strip and lube. The first magazine was all Failure-To-Feed and stovepipes. After that, hardly any problems. An occasional stovepipe and a Failure-to-Fire but it has a double strike capability so I pulled again and bang. Stopped at 90 rounds (I was shooting CCI mini mags, 40grn HPs). The gun was beginning to smooth out, but I was tired and wanted to clean and lube the Taurus before I tried again. Also want to bring my extra MecGar mags to shoot it to dependability.

If you have a SD9VE or SD40VE I whole heartly recommend the Apex trigger job! You'll like it.

Got 9 rounds out of my PT22 poly before the trigger pin broke. After its Florida vacation I dumped it. Out of 5 Tauri I got one I kept. (709)

Fixxed it for ya my man.

Very true. The SD series is a really solid gun except for the trigger. The Apex trigger actually changes the geometry on take-up/overtravel/reset and makes it a sweet shooter. I like mine very much.

    cporfe,

I recently bought a brand new SD9VE for $300 out the door. (Primary Arms)

I've shot somewhere between 300/400 rounds (I lost count) through it now. I shot a variety of fmj's with different grain bullets from 115 to 147 without a single hiccup. Zero malfunctions. I used both magazines it came with.

I'm going to leave the trigger as is. I like it.

The only mods: I added a Hogue Handall grip and replaced the take down lever. The stock take down lever is a pain to manipulate (too short) and to replace it is a snap effort and very inexpensive ($10)

Plus, it's a good looking pistol. I own a number of Glocks, Browning, Rugers, other good quality firearms, but I like this one very much. In fact, more than I would've imagined as I thought it a reliable, but crap looking when it turns out it looks terrific.

SD9/40VE are very under rated guns. Owned a 40 for years. its a keeper. One of these days I may add a 9 too.

45Tex, I'll be sure to keep an eye on the Poly for breakages. I've owned a few other Taurus autos and never had a problem with any. Except the PT111. My little pinky kept getting caught on mag changes. I gave that to my son who loves it. I bought a newer G2C recently but haven't shot it yet. I'll be very careful to move my pinky when I slam that mag home!

On the SD9 VE I didn't mention that I was shooting all 147grn Federal white box hollow points. That's my preferred range ammo because you can usually get it cheap by the case on the internet. Next trip I'll try the Hydra Shoks which I carry. When I run out of them I'll probably get "Black Belt" or maybe "deep" Hydra Shoks. for carry if the price is right.

Thanks for everyone's comments and encouragement.

I think about buying one of those Sd9's every time I see one. The complaints about a heavy trigger, along with academy being the only gun store that carries one in my area (won't let me try the trigger myself), are the only things that have stopped me.

I do have a PT22 though. Yellow and black. Mine is very picky. High velocity or it throws a fit. It was the first pistol I ever carried when I got my LTC though.

    San Antonio!
Many .22 semi-autos are picky when it comes to ammo, my SIG Skeeter is the worst of the bunch. However, my GSG 1911 will eat and cycle anything. As they are range toys, I'm not so concerned.

I have several Taurus and to be honest I prefer the triggers on them over my Springfield XDs! I not only find them to have a better reset, but I like the restrike capability a lot as well. I don't carry any of them, but I do think they are good self-defense pistols for someone on a budget. I would not hesitate to recommend them, but obviously a person should buy the most handgun they can afford if their life is going to depend on it, and with any weapon you should put a lot of rounds through it (especially those you plan to use) before carrying it!

I've had FIVE of the S&W pistols. Two were .40 cal and 3 were 9mm. I have the highest respect for those pistols, their reliability, construction, magazines and overall value. I have NO complaints about them. For those who complain about the triggers on those pistols, there is one obvious solution.... PRACTICE!

I had it seriously explained to me on the S&W forum a few years back that the SD VE guns just did not cost enough to be worthy of their use. And to think I once wondered why I got banned from there. He said while he was carrying his fave hideout the Ruger EC9s. Which he bought for $231 when they first came out

I agree it was a pretty solid pistol after the trigger change. Kinda wish I still had it.

I read the reviews of the SD9VE before I bought it and kept reading it was very reliable, but came with a long, mostly criticized trigger of 8/9lbs or so.

I looked at the low cost parts ($20.00) trigger change out videos.

I kept reading the reviews and lo and behold a few guys reported the trigger seemed acceptable to them. As someone suggested earlier in this thread - practise and the trigger will be no problem...and it isn't.

I ordered mine from Primary Arms - $300 out the door. I picked it up at the store as it's not all that far away and I wanted to see their new location. I bought Geissele triggers from them in the past, so yeah, I know good triggers.....

Before changing out this pistols trigger I had to try it. I can hit what I'm aiming at it with this pistol's trigger. Especially, after shooting it with 300/400 rounds downrange. And since it was going to be my yard gun, I wanted it with a trigger that wasn't easy to pull given I would be using yard tools while I kept it in my holster. I use axes, chain saws, sledge hammers etc. My outside the yard carry is a G19 with a 3.5lb trigger. I wouldn't want to do manual labor with that pistol on my hip.....

Of all my pistols, yeah I have a few, this has become my new favorite.

Would I defend my life with it even though it didn't cost a lot - damn right and I do.......

coolpop637, I appreciate you putting this up for sale. I always wanted one and this came at a good price with the new trigger. BUT, you can't have it back. :-)

I did buy extra mags off GB but the best price was buying 6 in a lot so I and my kids will have plenty when it's time for them to inherit.

    Chris,

If you will, what did you pay for it?

If you don't care to say, no problem.

I'm just curious, but obviously don't 'need to know' and thanks.

Mowingmaniac, Blackjack Guns had it list as $280 plus tax. I was able to get it for $280 out-the-door with the trigger job included. Not much cheaper than new, but it was excellent condition and I didn't have to buy a trigger job (which I would have if I bought new). So, to me, it was a great deal. AJ treated me right on this and other deals I've done with him.
