What, no one has posted a snippet of - take this job and shove it?

Generally it is a bad idea to burn Bridges, sometimes it is not possible.

I have had plenty places check references to.

Op, so I see you got employed. Was it the same place you asked us for interview advice?

Dude, I get it, hell I made a thread asking users how they deal with passive aggressive people. My boss is and I’m used to it now. You can get used to your boss. The reality is every person on this forum has had a shit boss. You’re still young. You still got a lot to figure out about yourself. My advice here is don’t be angry with him, just like you he’s got his life to worry about and he’s well your boss. It’s not like you can confront that while being treated fairly. My boss is too unstable. I wouldn’t be surprised if yours is too. He wasn’t interested in your reason. Just the way it is. Pretty much as vaquero suggested, shit or get off the pot. And I think you can do it. Where I shine is when a boss pisses me off. I take it out on work and I get stuff done like no other.

Don't quit your current job until you have another in hand. Always easier to find a job when you have one.

Also, leave your current job on good terms. Just say you found a better opportunity that you could not pass up. Never know what might come back around in the future. I have seen people sorely regret slamming the door behind them.
Words of wisdom right there oldag! Good post.

I've never used a reference before, but my work ethics, quality of workmanship followed me where ever I went, even out of state. Only time I ever didn't have a job was when I wasn't ready to go back to work yet.
Whether you "use a reference" or not, references are often sought behind your back, and what is said can be of great importance. There can be few exhortations more important to cement into one's thinking and being a grownup: "Do not burn your bridges". No one is saying you have to stay in a bad job situation; however, leave on your own steam when the time comes. There's absolutely no need to be petulant.

Not quite. I’ve had a full time job at the golf course and a part time job doing the books for a local business. I’m looking for one full time job to replace both still.

I quit my job without notice.

A year and a half later, the owner bought me dinner at Del Frescos and tried to hire me back.

Years ago one of my employees quit with no notice. A year or so later, he came back looking to return. I politely declined. He left the team in a lurch when he walked out. I could not trust him, and neither did the team.

And this just about describes the spectrum, except we’ve missed the anecdote of the employee quitting and being the hiring manager for the former employer, who’s now the job seeker and both permutations of that.

These anecdotes are situational and personality based, not objective. While many of us try to abide by the golden rule, not all do. And while we may try to the nth degree, external factors can play a role, too.

All that just boils down know yourself, know your employer, and in a right to work state, the end limit to loyalty exists with the employer, as in any given day, the employee can be terminated for something as simple as services no longer required.

Good employees have a retention strategy; good employees have a transition strategy.

I agree with not burning a bridge. Sometimes it happens, especially with those of us that are men. I’ll explain...I can be molded and lied to; you can abuse me pretty badly and as long as you have good character and are there to work, I’m cool. My issue is my temper and my boss before me well that’s just what the norm was. It’s especially bad when you have a co worker or boss that is only in it for the money and willingly allows bottle necks. An issue with my current job now. That’s just my breaking point. When a person isn’t proactive or would rather be on Facebook than correct an issue. But I have to cool off. These people are very passive aggressive.

It’s been my experience that it will all work out if you work hard. Just work hard. Almost every boss I have met won’t fire you because well they have to replace you. I’m finding out really fast in the metroplex they don’t have good pickings. I’ll watch some of these guys work and it’s sad. But I am kind of an asshole. Being nice and standing around not working seems to work for some. I just need to work for myself lol.

Remember op, it’s not who you know it’s who you blow lol. Jk

When I left teaching, I returned to industry working with automated (robotic) manufacturing machinery. It was hard, hot, dangerous work and there was a fatality during the first week of my employment.

I was never late, never missed work, kept up on technical advances and kept busy all the time whether a boss was present or not. That's how I work. I give everything that I'm paid to do.... and more!

My boss told me: "I hope some day, I'll have the training and experience that you have." I gave a lot, but in return, refused to take any crap from them.

Two of us were written up over a butt hurt boss. I told them I was going to file a complaint and they responded that I would be fired if I filed the complaint. I beat Hell out of them in the complaint, won the case and got both of us out of trouble!

At the same company, some jerk took a marker and trashed the washroom in the shop area. Gotta admit, it was pretty bad.

The company responded by putting a large padlock on the washroom so the men had to "go" off the shipping dock. It smelled awful!

That went on for weeks and I made several requests that the lock be removed. I'm an old man. When I gotta go, I gotta go.

I finally responded that I'd file a Health Department complaint if the lock wasn't removed. Of course, they threatened to fire me, again. The Health Department inspected, the lock disappeared and we finally had a proper toilet.

Some of you suggest that workers should kiss butt as employees. I'm just not built that way! I'll never sign away my rights to free speech or to be treated like a Human Being!

Yeah, "leaving on your own terms" and "not burning your bridges" has NOTHING to do with kissing ass. It has to do with having the fortitude to refrain from taking actions on the way out the door that serve no purpose but to (supposedly) make yourself feel better (not giving notice, cussing out the boss, sabotaging aspects of the workplace, destroying company property, stealing company property, stealing clients/business opportunities contrary to contract, etc.). Leave on your own steam, and do so because you can no longer remain and keep your self-respect. Leave because you have professional goals that aren't being met or that you're being held back from meeting same. There's just no reason to piss on folks' Wheaties while you're walking out the door with your dignity intact.

In a state where the business can fire you for most any reason, the worker can usually quit for any reason. I wouldn't advocate for leaving without notice. If you fill out an application, or have a resume, businesses usually ask for your work experience. They will often ask what you were doing during a time you don't list in experience, so gaps in time may not work towards your favor. If a business is listed as experience, then a company may call that business, it doesn't have to be listed as a reference.

Folks were going to great lengths to display how they DON'T/WON'T kiss the boss' ass . . . as though that is somehow the same as "not burning bridges". If you read the entire thread, you get the picture.
I was just going off the end of post #53 and throwing my .02 on the subject of cheek kissers.

I must say... you won't find any or much in this bunch. We all seem too much like misfits, rebels or just down right real MEN to disrespect ourselves like that.
