    Mothers like to hide their young in grass like that. It is a good way to keep an eye on them and the coyotes seem to avoid them when they are more "out in the open".
    Those ain't the only things that like to hide in the grass...

    Fortunately for this little guy, I saw him well before getting close (they blend in remarkably well if not paying attention), and he just seemed interested in catching some rays, so had no beef...

    That is one mean looking snake. Living in Texas you learn to watch all the time.
