what powder is recommended for heavy 223 rounds loaded to shoot out to 600yds?

    I have a 18" 1-8 barrel if that makes a difference.

I use CFE223. Kinda temp sensitive, but it meters beyond exceptionally well. 69g Sierra Match Kings are tha bomb(heh).

Varget is a good choice especially if you already have it.

I always used IMR4064 for 308 and it works very well in 223 too. You don't hear much about it lately it seems though.

Honestly there are many good powders that will work great.

Lots of powders can fill that role. According to my references you can use: H4895, Varget, RE-15, VV N140, VV N135, AA 2520, WW 748, VV N540, VV N550, and maybe more. There are at least a couple of those that I wouldn't use because I feel sure I'd find something that worked well enough before I got around to them.
It'll be nice to buy one powder for both
If you've already standardized on Varget for your .308, use it for your .223. I think the odds are much better than even that you'll find loads that will work just fine.

I went down the powder selection path a few years ago for my 223 bolt gun and heavy bullets. Varget was OK but I found H-4895 to be a better performer in my rifle.

I went for cfe-223 for easy metering. Have an 18" AR. Settled on 24.5gr under a Hornady 75gr bthp and 25.5gr under the Sierra 69gr tmk. Only chronod the 69gr and was getting 2748fps however e.s. was 44.2 which is poor if your shooting any real distance. Accuracy was under 1" at 100 yards though for both.

I wonder how many millions of times someone has been able to say that, for a huge variety of cartridge/bullet/rifle combinations.

No joke. I use that on a few cartridges, a couple I would have never guessed it to work on.

I've used H335 in my 223 rounds almost exclusively. W748 works pretty good on 50g bullets, but never tried it with the heavy bullets.

A line from a favorite reference of mine is:
...try some WW748. ...if your AR-15 won't shoot tight 300 rapids off a Sierra 69 with 25.5 grains of that stuff then, son, you have a gun problem.

A LOT of times! It is a favorite for the 224 Valkyrie handloading group. Many (including me) have excellent results with the 80 gr Hornady ELD-M. It would work for the 69gr as well. H4895 is also VERY temperature stable.

The 224V is close to the 223 when it comes to powder selection.

I run 8208 in my 223 ai with 80gr vld. If I didn't run it I would probably try h4895.
